  • As with milk, which is even cheaper, it's more wondering whether it needs to be wasted or not. I had a little bit. No ill effects yet.

  • I don't need a reason

  • This of use to any classic enthusiasts out there? I know nothing of these things. Not in terrible shape considering

  • What the brand name on it? it look like the rail are steel and with the spring inside, I doubt it'll fetch money.

    Doesn't look like an Ideale to me, which was the competitor to Brooks at the time which use aluminium rail;

  • these centering springs are nearer to 'nice to have' than to 'essential to prevent death'?

ie i can ride without one for a few days/weeks

  • I think it's Witonde or something? It was readable in the shop, but hasn't come out very well in the picture.

Edit: ah, says on the tag. Wittkop.

  • Nice to have, they only center the skewer so you don't have to fiddle about getting the dropouts in between. No purpose once clamped.

  • Ah, sorry, I didn't realise that that was what you stumbled over. There is no epenthic schwa in the German name. It's exactly the same sequence of consonants as in 'Cockney' and 'Hackney'. The only difference is in stress ('cock' and 'hack' being the stressed syllables). I can well imagine that the lack of a difference in stress within the initial kn- may make it more difficult for certain speakers to produce the initial kn- as opposed to -kn-, e.g. native English speakers, but German speakers are used to this.

  • Before I subscribed to a bike forum,
I would have guessed Epenthic Schwa was a minor Star Wars character.

    Make it so!

    Er ... wait, wrong franchise.

  • No epenthic schwas in Klingon?

  • It's exactly the same sequence of consonants as in 'Cockney' and 'Hackney'.

I suspect most English speakers wouldn't release the [k] in either of those two words though, so not exactly the same.

  • What is Craig's beef with Kevin?

  • Where can I buy a 1" threaded disc fork please?

  • Options are limited. I have just fitted one I bought off eBay - that's 700c but same seller has 26" version

Edit: I haven't actually ridden this yet so I don't know whether it's any good - but let's face it, it's a 1" disc fork, they're shit by definition

  • In London on Tuesday with a few hours to kill. Where's a good area to rummage through charity/vintage/other shops for nice jumpers and flannel shirts, that kind of shit.

  • Oh, not helpful, but might be able to grab my SMP from you?

  • Sure thing! PM me, I'm about Wednesday morn as well.

  • Maybe look at Rokit - they have a few locations so you might be able to find something else nearby. https://www.rokit.co.uk/

  • Traid in Camden Town, or any of the charity shops in posho central aka. Notting Hill

  • Has anyone gotten away with bringing power tools on a plane in their carry on luggage?

I’m going to rescue my car from Berlin tomorrow and it’d be a bloody great help if I could bring my own drill, grinder and socket set.

  • drill - no
    socket set - maybe
    angle grinder - absolutely not

  • Not a chance. I got stopped because I had a cassette removal tool in my bag, which got confiscated. Hold luggage for power tools.

  • or post them to yourself

  • Is there a site like TvTropes without all the cruft and anime shit? i.e. a usable directory of film/TV cliche?
