Made mincemeat last Sunday, first batch of pies getting made later, they'll obviously be amazing.
Shop pies, greggs are obviously pretty good, patisserie Valerie were giving some away the other week, really, really deep, nice filling and great textured pastry, all just a tiny bit sweet though. -

I like the box standardisation that's gone on between vendors.
Red = normal
Gold = poshReally exposes the arse-about-face state of the crisp industry, who can't settle on a colour for cheese and onion despite years of regulatory pressure.

Tempted by the brandy/cider combo.

Standard ones?
Packet I read listed palm oil as an ingredient. I'm only looking for easy differentiators to reduce the seemingly limitless choice. -
• #1407
Their 'Best Deep Filled Mince Pies', yeah, do contain some palm oil. Not tasty enough to justify the environmental impact.
-
• #1408
Thanks for the clarification. I'll avoid.

Suet. From cows.
No environmental impact there. -

Aren't the vast majority of shop-bought mincers these days made with vegetable suet - if they even contain any suet at all? Been that way for ages, I thought.
(Apologies to any obligate carnivores who may be upset by this news)

Suet is the raw, hard fat of beef or mutton found around the loins and kidneys.
I didn't know that vegetables had loins and kidneys.
-

They don't, but I'm afraid that "vegetable suet" is still a thing, in much the same way that vegetarian sausages aren't made out of actual minced-up pigs (or minced-up vegetarians) .

Gnnn it fucks with my pedantry instinct
-
• #1414
I use vegetable suet when cooking for veggie friends, didnt actually realise that it is palm oil with added flour.

I think if you're picking on palm oil in mice pies but ignoring the ground up animal in the mince meat, it's hypocritical and representative of the patriarchal hegemony we live in today.

Working from home is going well. I'm onto number five of these beauties from Aldi. Mini-mincer haters hold your fire.
Gently heated and accompanied by a coffee they are hitting the spot beautifully. Pastry is quite crumbly but I don't mind that and the icing sugar on the top is welcome
Roll on elevenses.

Frangipane-topped mince pies
These look amazing. Do you have a recipe?
Frangipane-topped mince pies. I think I prefer making these to normal mincers as it's easier to prevent them leaking. Plus, they're totes delish.
