  • Does anyone know if it works putting a shimano 34T inner ring on a Shimano R8000 46-36 chainset to make a 46-34?

Also, would there really be a noticeable real world improvement in the jumps between gears compared to a 50-34? Both would be used on a Di2 setup with an 11-34 cassette?

  • I asked this to @Alb he said its ok .. do it.

But shimano 'gravel' cranks are incoming I think ..

  • Essentially. Then slap a guard or file off the teeth of a outer ring for all the pretty.

Or wait a year or so when it all becomes popular.

  • Good to know. Looking at gear ratio comparisons and gaps between gears, it doesn't make a lot of sense on a 11-34 cassette, however on a SRAM 11-36 it would create a lot more usable gears.

  • Yep full gruppo with some bonkers options (l/h dedicated dropper shift lever and hydraulic cross-tops). Will dig out chainset details

  • l/h dedicated dropper shift lever

    Mucho interesting

  • Should I be selling my sugino ox601d 46/30 while it still has some value or is this all some way out?

  • Actually the sugino cranks are pretty good and shift well. Recommended if you can find at a good price. I've thought about getting something else but stayed with them a few years now as they do what they should well.

I don't get this? 46/30 isn't a new fad - it's a standard that's been used for years by Randos that is finally being noticed by non-randos. Same goes for 650b. Aside from the expected depreciation of used bike parts, I don't see a huge "drop" in value coming anytime soon.

  • Shimano’s using their offset/asymmetrical 110bcd outer combined with an 80bcd inner so your suginos will still be relevant (even more so if they’re silver too)

  • been used for years by Randos that is finally being noticed by non-randos

    There's your answer.

  • I've gone the other way around and put a 46 on a 50/34. I really, really like it. (with an 11/34 cassette)

  • What do you feel are the benefits, and is the shifting as good? From my links above, I can’t see that you gain much with an 11-34. It seems like there is a real benefit with 11-36 and possibly higher than that.

    What I really want is a 32-46 or 48.

  • really? how sure are you?

  • I was coming from a praxis 48/32 paired with an 11/32. The premise of the change was that I was tired of the praxis being annoying in various ways and wanted to keep similar gears. Shifting is miles better (I’m using di2), as are the cranks (6800) in general. In terms of gears I’m now sat on the middle of the cassette rather than the bottom half, and I stay on the big ring more often. I didn’t think two teeth would make such a difference but there you go.

  • Did this with the randonneurs’ classic TA Pro Viz a while back for towing a trailerbike on a audaxy bike, 46-30, old school friction shifters, NR mechs, worked beautifully and looked lovely. Even put cross tyres on it, musta been a gravel bike before they were a thing. #allofyourtrendyismyoldschool

Right on, that's me too. Big ring everywhere on the flat/downhill/short hills with 46/30 + 11-36. I front shift about once every 10 miles, only on big hills. It's not far off 1× with 46t + 11-32 (or 28 depending how you feel about cross chaining) except you don't need to worry about climbing because you've got the granny ring. Love it.

  • Has no one else tried Absolute blacks oval rings?

  • Someone was selling one on here, search through the classifieds.

I’ve ruled them out because they’re oval (and expensive).

  • Ive got a pair on my tripster and they are fantastic. Oval doesnt affect shifting but i feel it helps climbing. No pricier tan most other rings of similar quality.

  • Ha it’s like a mirror of my own thoughts! Hardly surprising but slightly comical.
Have you ventured any further down this route?

  • Yeah, I use Absolute Black ovals on my distance bike. 48/32 with an 11-34T block. It was a bit of a faff to set up the front mech accurately but it works well. I bought them for the ratios but now I'm also sold on the oval shape too. I don't notice it until the cadence drops and/or I get out of the saddle for steep climbs. Given the ratios though I can stay seated up almost anything. Great for ultras.
