I’ve ruled them out because they’re oval (and expensive).

Yeah, I use Absolute Black ovals on my distance bike. 48/32 with an 11-34T block. It was a bit of a faff to set up the front mech accurately but it works well. I bought them for the ratios but now I'm also sold on the oval shape too. I don't notice it until the cadence drops and/or I get out of the saddle for steep climbs. Given the ratios though I can stay seated up almost anything. Great for ultras.
