• I was going through a similar loop when I was looking for my next car a couple of years ago. Heart said 6 cylinder 5 series touring, maybe 4 - 6 years old.

Ended up buying a new Skoda Superb 220 (4 cylinder VAG TSi lump).

PCP over 4 years, full warranty for 4 years. It's comfortable and nice to drive. Obviously it isn't performance car quick but you put your foot down and it shifts. The turbo is nicely progressive. You can fit a tonne of stuff in it. It has creature comforts. It's fine to drive long distances in. It's hassle free.

For me, it's the best balance between practical, affordable, desirable (ish!) and low hassle (my decision making was heavily skewed towards low hassle).

  • I don't mind the looks of the Superb estate at all, and they do a 280 version I think too. The wheels are fucking terrible though.

Someone else on here owns one too, right? The person with a few cars, throttle bodied mx5 and classic Merc?

  • Not sure who else has one but if you want to have a spin in mine, let me know. I'm East.

The 280 wasn't availabe when I bought mine, they were only doing vRS Octavias.

  • Double-posted my reply below so here's a random pic:

Found a way to get more than 20mpg out of the RRC. No LPG conversion required.

  • You called?

Although it's an '18 MY Octavia vRS 245. Similar spec to a Golf GTI Performance Pack (fancy VAQ diff etc). Reasonably brisk, yet can get close to 40mpg on a run. Leased for £151 per month for two years with a £2,400 deposit. This is my second Octavia and I haven't had an ounce of bother with either in 50,000 odd miles. The fixed price servicing is fairly reasonable to boot. You are welcome to come and take a look/ride if you are ever passing through NW6.

I still have the W115 Mercedes, ITB MX-5 and V8 Range Rover Classic too. It's actually a surprisingly economical fleet to run. Not being dependent on them for daily transport means a sensible approach can be taken to maintenance and there should not be any depreciation to worry about.
