Definitely grab a bike hire one, if you were more local I’d happily lend you one / a demo from work for a weekend etc.
The hire bikes are great, take it home, take it to work, check it fits in the cupboard / boot / under desk etc.
You will NEVER go back!
Just be warned, grab the bike, get those tyres up to 100psi, and the brake levers / gear shifter is probably the old style, so a bit sponges brakes and the shifters above the bars not below. Just grab a shop demo for a spin as well so you get to ride a brand new one to compare so you can learn a bit more!
