They played it exactly as you might if your only concern was getting into power. That is, trying their very best to walk the line of the wildly differing Brexit views of their core voters. If their members actually decided the direction of the party we remainers might have some meaningful representation in parliament. Another side effect of FPTP I guess.
I'm amazed it took you this long to get here. This is British politics after all - 90% of these people don't actually care about what is best for the country. It is all just a game for them where getting into power is the only goal.
