Is this a joke?

Yeah, just a thinner snap ring, there are other mods, I’ll use the thin ring for my gfs bike, 9 speed igh conversion for my winter bike and the hubSmith option for my summer speed bike..

My ramblings / experiments are on here...
Adding all the time,
Need to fill out the Rohloff Vostok bit tomorrow

Put a bit of gorilla tape or similar at the right height and as you lift the post up the tape stops it.
-
• #5805
So the same function as the insert, but what if you need to raise it?
-
• #5806
Why not just mark it with some paint or something? Then it won't impede anything and you know instantly.
-
• #5807
Just bite the bullet and let me build you another custom bike for the OH!
-
• #5808
You have to take the tape off. Which is obviously pretty easy.
-
• #5809
I've never found any paint, marker or whatever that will not get rubbed off after a week or so of use.
-
• #5810
So if you’re switching between users (as @Clockwise has insinuated)... then taking the tape off becomes a faff, no?
-
• #5811
Cut a wee notch with a hacksaw at your desired height, hey presto!!
-
• #5812
I would sand paint off in a small ring at desired height. Masking tape to get a clean edge. Do the same for second (shorter) user if you like but it will be visible when taller rider is riding
Cost: 0.2p's worth of masking tape and sandpaper

• #5813
Well it's fine if he's the tallest user. I was talking about how it works generally, I still haven't found a good solution for setting it to a lower height consistently and occasionally a higher one.

I think the only sensible answer is n+1
-
• #5815
Surely has to be thinner spacers too?
-
• #5816
Only one spacer, no thinner

So I've been speaking to @maynardeames about building a Brompton and he's been INCREDIBLY helpful.
I was hit by a car on my road bike over summer, so that's borked and I'm looking to replace it with a new commuter. My logic is: Brompton for commuting/nipping about and then maybe a 'real' bike for longer miles if I find I want one.
I've never ridden a Brompton before though and I'd like to try one out before making the leap! So my question; is there any way I can do this? There was an extended test-ride at cyclesurgery but that seems to have ended.

There are places you can rent them from a locker.
East Croydon Rail Station is one such place.

That's SO cool.
There's one just down the road from me!

I believe you can still do the extended borrowing from Brompton Junction in Covent Garden.

Definitely grab a bike hire one, if you were more local I’d happily lend you one / a demo from work for a weekend etc.
The hire bikes are great, take it home, take it to work, check it fits in the cupboard / boot / under desk etc.
You will NEVER go back!
Just be warned, grab the bike, get those tyres up to 100psi, and the brake levers / gear shifter is probably the old style, so a bit sponges brakes and the shifters above the bars not below. Just grab a shop demo for a spin as well so you get to ride a brand new one to compare so you can learn a bit more!

Where did you get that thinner snap ring? I have a single speed which I am thinking of converting into 3 speed!
-
• #5823
I’m having some made, can add you to the list if you wish?
-
• #5824
Yes please!

@maynardeames
Me too, ta!
