The empire was driven by greed and commercial interest at the expense of locals if necessary.
Often they would nice up a few locals to maintain power.. and would mostly maintain local customs, this would keep them in control... This system was very successful. But They did promote missionaries tbh.
The political system was in English
And names where adjusted to suit.
The reality is that many people benefited from the British at the expense of the masses and that is what maintained power.
Names where relatively minor issue..considering famines and massacres.

It was contempt. It was basically, "fuck you we don't care how it's been pronounced so far, we can't say it that way, we're not even going to bother trying, so here, this is how you will say and spell it from now on".
