In my home town one of the nicer local hills to walk was called Chinks Peak. In the late 90s there was a campaign to get it changed to Chinese Peak (which was successful). There were a few who were de-crying the name change and "that's the way it's always been / loss of my culture" etc.
This is a morally clear cut instance when a place was desperate need of changing, however I think it does show that possibly sweeping phrases like "I think names should remain as they are" needs continual and revised context.
