  • i love a ryvita.
also on a bit of a matzos jag atm. happy hannukah!

  • when heated beyond the smoke point

Just means that it tastes bad and is an expensive way to make meat taste bad.

Rapeseed is good. Or cheap light olive oil.

  • Getting a head start on dinner, ribs are simmering, BBQ sauce done. Had a few substitutes, notably mirin instead of white wine vinegar but tastes fine. New jar of parprika is a bit punchy.

  • I enjoyed, too caramalised for the kid. Did not enjoy the pan scrub but have a few liters of spicy broth for lunch.

  • first ever attempt at a curry today
thought i'd try a chicken balti
it's simmering on the stove as we speak, haven't given it a taste yet as chicken isn't quite cooked, but my eyes are watering in the next room, can feel that curry heat / sweat on my face from inhaling it

    • onion garlic ginger.... fry
    • add brown mustard seeds... fry further
    • add chilli, turmeric, fenugreek seeds, cinnamon stick, bay, cardamom, cloves, cumin seeds, corriander seeds, paprika .... fry more
    • add chicken and a small amount water .... simmer let flavours infuse
    • add 2 tins cherry tomatoes

simmer for a couple of hours

have i added to many spices, anyone spot any obvious flaws
the recipe was gleaned from half a dozen recipes on the net and i just kept adding spices from each recipe to my list and just chucked them all in

  • add 2 tins cherry tomatoes

    Killer

  • Ramen : London: not bone daddies

ippudo, central st giles piazza, st giles high st
    tonkotsu soho, dean st

quick google gave me the above, I have been to top two, love tonkotsu out in haggerston.

  • Great.
A look through this thread gave me
    Kanada-ya

Sometimes, all the time, it's better asking this place as for some daft reason it's like I trust the reviewers....

  • Kanada-Ya is great

  • did you try them yet mashton ?

No, I haven't been near a morrisons yet. Amazing but true.

  • Kanada ya is great but it’s small and unless you get there at the right time there is always queuing, as it’s so very popular with the Japanese...

  • Ended up missing out on ramen, Christmas shopping. Sigh.

  • was going to ask which one you chose in the end. Sadface.jpg

  • @Aroogah - please can you post you bread and butter pickles link again - ta!

  • chicken balti went down well, might not have been entirely happy paying for it on brick lane but for a first effort i'm happy, 2nd helpings tonight and i'm not dreading it

4/7 not quite perfect but a start, wrote a rough recipe will try it again slightly differently, next up something slightly less complex

any good curry style recipes out tere you can recommend, now i've got all the spice seems a shame not to try a few different things

  • I make this one quite often, you can make loads for almost nothing and it freezes fine. Also fine to skip the more random ingredients (mango powder, 'hing' etc) and it's still really good.

  • Indian recipes you say? My Mum has written an Indian recipe book that has literally just been released (for which I have done the photography). Shameless self plug, but it seemed like the perfect opportunity.

It’s a non-profit book, with all proceeds going to a family member’s memorial fund. This will then be distributed to a number of youth-focused charities.

The recipe are almost all Punjabi (North Indian), with a focus on explaining the reasoning behind certain ingredients and methods, as well as a bit of a social commentary from my mum growing up as a 2nd generation Indian in the UK.
