  • Sadly that's too out of the way for me - I'm never round those parts and ideally need somewhere that my gf can get to from forest hill during the daytimes that she's at home with the baby. Would check it out if I made it out to those parts though...

  • In the past year I've gone from full headphone usage to buying amps, record players, lots of speakers.

I've now set up the amp in my room too so I can listen to that in bed or when working.

Honestly I'm so happy with it...

  • In other news, the Dalis arrived and I've set them up. So, so happy with them. They sound incredible last night was spent listening to songs and hearing parts I haven't heard before (something similar to what I experienced when using quality headphones for the first time).

They'll need a few hours to burn in but with Christmas coming I'm sure that won't take long at all.

  • I've no idea what I'm doing.
For some reason I'm against active speakers - probably because I don't understand how they work.

  • The Ruark MR1 MK2 are really good for the size. May be a little out of budget though, although it's worth keeping an eye on their outlet store.

  • There's a Plex thread on here somewhere too. It's pretty capable, I think my library has 20,000 or so items in it now.

  • @Aroogah
Forget about using your headphone socket, the quality will always be poor. You'll need a DAC as well as a pair of powered near field monitors. Mini studio DACs are cheap and have USB input to take audio and power directly from your computer. IMO a desktop setup needs a decent volume knob and accessible headphone socket.

    My set up:
Focusrite i412 DAC (but a 212 will probably do just fine)
Presonus Eris 4.5s, but any similar spec NFMs will do
Acoustic isolation pads being added under the monitors to stop leaking resonance to the desk

You can do all of the above for £200

  • How much and how clean?

  • Sensible answer is eminently sensible. Thank you @freddo !

  • < tips hat >

  • I'm currently after the same, actually came here to ask similar advice. but would also like to be able to DAB without having to connect computer/phone. Was lookinga this as it has USB input also for decent quality sound. Looked at the DAC route as Farid suggested, but think it limits options.

I've been out of the hifi game for a few years now though, as I've been more than content since I last dropped a considerable amount on home hifi a few years back, so could be way off the mark.

  • For ages I have been obsessed about replacing my rotel 930ax with a naim nait or a mission cyrus two, as the bench space on two expedits dictated it would be the perfect fit and allow some record storage up top.

I have now added third expedit, so have way more bench space, I can also move another meter of records out of storage - yes!

Having followed cyrus 1s and 2s or naims on ebay for a while ,I don't really know what else to consider? I am thinking silver and shiny, so considering a technics suz2 xe, because who doesn't love VU meters It would be sat between a Rega Planar two and BW 601.

Although I did smuggle the expedit in, I think the overall goal of Klipsch heresy's and a fischer valve amp are a little way of. I might switch the Bw 601s for a pair of Totem Mites at some point, bu anything that isn't a bookshelf speaker has been veto'd.

  • That also looks very good as well. I miss not working around the corner from Richer Sounds. :(

  • Both look good. I'm not sure that I need the wirelessness for the speakers but I can see the appeal

  • would work, but IDK man, a display in my peripheral vision would drive me nuts. But I'm crotchety about minor distractions like that, they give me teh rage

  • It's ok. The sprawling desk clutter would keep the display hidden...

  • JVC hidden somewhere, connected to your network, play your computer through it. Never see the display.

  • That JVC looks quite nice too, for a compact system that is.

If it's net radio you're after I'd recommend looking at the Yamaha WXC-50, I picked one up last week and paired with my PC through optical.

However I don't need to have the PC on for it to run.

  • Distressingly tidy set-up there.

  • The new setup.

  • You need a bigger telly

  • And it needs to go on the wall.

  • If you call Virgin, I think they'll give you a free upgrade on that old "steam powered" Tivo you have there.
