I thought throwing that second ball on was piss funny.
Classic technique on our 5-a-side game if someone lumps the ball out of the cage. Their team is down to 4 people (and rush keepers) whilst the player goes to get it, if they've collected it and the other team are attacking it's traditional to throw it back on and shout "ball on" just at the right moment.
The home team's stewards and ball boys/girls are responsible for making sure that fans don't get to keep any balls lumped into the crowd for this very reason.
