  • it is fucking abysmal in hood format, until paired with the tin cloth jacket and you feel smug as fuck

however as a hat with the option of pulling down the ear flaps it rocks.

also had a few small bits of dead wood falling and they bounced off it in recent days

initially my wife laughed at it, but after a few weeks she now wants to get one for her dad for christmas as he does lots of woodland conservation work

  • Possible renaming of thread to: If hipsters did real work?

    ftfy

  • Not sure if you are insinuating i do real work or that I am a hipster.

  • I've met plenty of hipsters that don all sorts of garb that suggests some kind of labour occurring, from post bags to roadwork jackets to lumberjack shirts-it's just not remotely relevant to whatever it is they actually do, be it microblogging how to make your own oat milk or recontextualising someone else's creative output just enough to stick their watermark on it... for further reference see: Mamnick.

  • I had some decent jackets from Refrigiwear in the past, although they seem to be more on the modern hi-viz spectrum now.

Schott also, but that looks to have gone in another direction entirely

  • Extremely fair point. It's for this very reason I'm keen to find out what natty looking workwear is actually useful for work through recommendations from trusted denizens of taste (forumengers) as opposed to being a fashion exercise for wankers/ yompers.

  • German ‘zunfthose’. Indestructible and can be styled as hipster as you want:

    https://www.fhb.de/produkte/zunftbekleidung/produkt/ewald-700444-ursprung-roehren-zunfthose-zwirn-doppel-pilot/

The models without the flares are avtually quite nice.

  • Must revisit Dickies!

    I wouldn’t bother.

I have a couple pairs of work pants I bought 10-15 years ago. I’ve had them cut off and hemmed to make them into shorts now. They’ve been worn constantly and for everything, mech work, riding, walking etc and they only started looking a bit tired a couple years back.

I bought another pair when I noticed them looking worn and I wore through the arse in those after about a year.

Supposedly they used to be US made but then shifted production to the Far East and the quality took a massive dive.

  • The wildfowl hat

That's one of the finest pieces of headwear I've ever seen. Getting the old man one for Xmas.

  • I have noticed a similar drop in quality, they are no longer durable when rolling on the floor under cars. The older stuff used to be much harder wearing.

In possibly the most hipster statement on this thread, a couple of my friends who work on cars and fabricate for a living have started buying Japanese car manufacturer branded overalls from Japanese eBay and had good results. I'm on the lookout for a Mazda set for myself. Not sure that's the kind of advice you're looking for though!

  • 6’3 and Japanese clothing doesn’t tend to be a good mix!

  • Haha that is very true! I've got the opposite problem, I'm only 5'5"and I tried a few "boiler suits" from army surplus stores when I was younger and they were just huge on me.

  • I get what i am issued.
Sizing is a lottery depending on where it's sourced from.
Boots last about 4 months then fall apart.
Trousers...... no idea what model they sized from but most have to size up to fit.

Not being a work/hipster i get dragged down walls, sides of vehicles, dodge arrogant impatient tossers in vehicles while working around vehicle (hi-vis is important) and if anything is badly soiled, it gets yellow bagged and killed by fire.

Primark t-shirts here too, as cheap and consumable.
Lowra boots are a bit creaky but long lasting. Magnums last ok and comfy.
Scruffs, dunlop, budget safety boots are generally shit (what i get now).

  • Englebert Strauss is a very good call. Black trousers with reflective seams. You don't need them until you need them.

  • I've been very happy with my Snap-On overalls, 10/10 would recommend!

  • anyone know where in london I can try on some dickies overalls?
preference for north/east part of town
or anyone else who makes nice overalls in decent range of colours

  • I think they do free returns so just mail order some

  • My one eyed dog looks better in my hat than I do

  • Carhartt still do the Union Made line in the US - duck pants are about $50 and you’ll be hard pushed to find better value for money.

  • Has anyone seen non-WIP Carhartt anywhere in London recently? Or is it only available online?

Way, way BITD every market had someone with a rail of jackets imported from US.

Have bought stuff from here in the past ...don’t know if they still do international shipping (it’s a US site) used to get cheap carhartt jeans from there.

But what do I know, I’m a soft handed office worker.

  • Anyone been in Jay's Workwear in Surrey Quays lately?

  • Some of the 2nd hand shops around me have the proper stuff in but you're a mug if you're paying what they're charging.
