I have noticed a similar drop in quality, they are no longer durable when rolling on the floor under cars. The older stuff used to be much harder wearing.
In possibly the most hipster statement on this thread, a couple of my friends who work on cars and fabricate for a living have started buying Japanese car manufacturer branded overalls from Japanese eBay and had good results. I'm on the lookout for a Mazda set for myself. Not sure that's the kind of advice you're looking for though!
