had some of the much vaunted Asda mince pies over the weekend. Don't live up to the hype. Filling is great - aided by a healthy splash of booze - but the pastry is sub par. Didn't see any reason to rank it any higher than my standard everyday mince pie: the co-op irresistible ones (the luxury ones, not the brandy buttercream abominations).

Its only a couple of hours down to Northumberland. I could probably do 12 in the sitting but I want to pace myself for the rest of the trip.

Heston lemon mince pies are horrible, way too sweet and dusted with icing sugar.
