• Yeah it seems like almost every time someone actually goes to jail for injuring or killing a cyclist, it turns out it's mostly due to other charges. It's a fucking joke.

The overall message is pretty clear: the 'system' does not have your back. You cycle at your own risk. All the stuff about wanting to promote cycling is empty talk, and 'the government' / powers that be / whatever you want to call 'the man' as a whole has absolutely no intention of really changing anything in the way traffic works. Not only here, but in 95% of all countries in the world.

  • Yeah I wish it was different, and I'm as glad as anyone could be every time there is any kind of movement in the right direction, but sometimes it's worth taking a step back. Because that's when you realise you've grown so accustomed to the shitty environment you're in that you're actually starting to see the most minimal improvement as a big deal. Basically, this is the situation of the beggar who is starting to be genuinely grateful for the nobleman throwing him some crumbs, as if the situation wasn't massively fucked to begin with.

I've lived, cycled and commuted in a number of different towns in different countries now, and despite people acting as if good urban planning was some kind of deep mystery, in a lot of cases it is super obvious what should be done, or at least what some definitely positive steps would be. But there is simply no political will to actually force that to happen, because god forbid you upset the status quo. Never mind all the climate change and air pollution crap, where will we be if cars aren't being used as the measure of all things anymore? For the ones who understand German: freie Fahrt für freie Bürger!
