Bikepacking - a viable alternative to racks & panniers

  • Looks like my chosen producer (Triglav) won't make me bags on time for my trip, so need to look somewhere else. I need a frame bag (under the top tube one, so I can still use bottle cages with side exit) and a saddle bag, already have a handlebar harness. I see Wiggle have Blackburn Outpost Seatpack for 50 GBP, anything else I should consider instead in similar budget?
And for frame bags I also would ask for your recommendations, also considering an Outpost bag, I can order medium/large for circa 40 GBP in a Polish shop. Any experience if large one will fit in 56 cm frame?
Another alternative is other local producer, bikepack.pl.
Bike is a size large Pickenflick, I have measured about 11-11,5 cm clearance aboce the bottle in the lowest cage position.

  • wow, bloody great bargains.
the big seat pack for £60 is a mad deal.

  • Price looks nice indeed. Is this bag much better than Blackburn Outpost seat pack? No experience with either for me.

  • And regarding the frame bags - I have measure my frame, inside it is 52 TT, 45 ST, 59 DT, 6 TT (all cm). I could either fit Topeak Midloader and two bottles below or Blackburn large measures 50.8x45.7 so should fit almost perfectly, also it has a dedicated hydration pack routing so I could keep the water inside too. Which will be more practical in your opinion?
And when considering those Porcelain Rocket seatbags, does the small one have any advantage? More stable?

  • yes, much better.
get the small one if you never carry much stuff. I'd get the large one personally.

  • Anyone tried these lomo seatpacks?

  • I have almost zero experience with bikepacking (only did one 4-day tour with airbnb housing on the way), can you explain more what are the advantages of this bag compared to the Blackburn one?

  • more functional, sturdy, and beautiful.

  • I have considered a harness to be more functional than any "normal" saddle bag, being able to remove the bag easily etc., where is it worse then? As I said, no real experience for me yet.

  • As I said, no real experience for me yet

well you'll see if you use one, that's all I have to say for now.

  • Blackburn cheap Chinese shit.

PR some of the best kit you will find.

Holster is loads better in use, but between those 2 I would choose the PR every time. Build quality is legendary.

  • I have the Blackburn saddlebag.
It's usable, but I am sure there are better ones.
Also not necessarily the nicest company.

    Basically what the others said.

  • The best thing about the Blackburn seatbag is the holster and the drybag. I will not go for some all-in-one saddlebag. It's a not practical to pack efficiently, IMO. With the drybag , I can easily press it and let the air go out, and then put it in place in the holster.
The Blackburn framebag is not so good ... Looks even more cheap than the saddlebag. The 2 sizes is a great idea but I don't like it. In the closed position, there's the fabric inside and it take place and bothers when you want to grab something small and in the bottom. Also, don't catch too much rain with this framebag...

So in conclusion, I'm really happy with the saddlebag but not with the framebag. I'll change the second one and keep the first one as long as I can.

  • I have. Build quality isn't great but will do the job if you're looking for an entry level bag. I wouldn't take it on a tour overseas.

  • Seems that I will be able to order a custom framebag finally like I originally planned, so will go for it. Only saddlebag question remains, I was first thinking about taking a smaller bag from Triglav or a small PR one, but I already have 2,5 l 700 saddle bag from Decathlon that is perfect for some short trips (even more when I will have a frame bag), so a bigger one might be a better supplement to my other gear.

  • Mine split after 4 days use ...

  • hypebeast x cotton canvas

  • They're great. Any advantage other than weight over an audax bag though?! I'll guiltily admit to loving the flouro. Is it too soon for flouro to be back?

  • Oh, it's smaller too

Restrap are doing a decent competition where you can win a Temple Cycles Adventure Disc Bike and all the bags you could need (looks like one of every type they make pretty much). Just needs a bit of addition and newsletter sign up

  • i would enter, but i can't be arsed to work it out...
