Um'd and ahh'd about tyre choice and then caught these Smart Sam's on PX for cheap so decision was made. Admittedly a bit over the top for the school run / commute but i do have the option of a former railway track / trail and a field to cross if I fancy also maybe a-bit helpful if we get another snowy winter - 700x40c hoping I can squeeze them in under some 53 Bleumels. Couldn't resist the typography and stupidly minimal WTB grips for 5 quids. First Nitto purchase for me too and very excited about the bars.

So seeing as half term is about to be over... decided I better try and get this bike done - stupid as now I have only 3 days to do it before school starts again and I NEED a child carrying device. Nothing like a deadline to focus the mind. Easy I thought - just strip it down Thursday night, clean it Friday night - Assembly can be squeezed in over the weekend and worst case I do a late one Sunday to get it at least rideable.
So I mixed myself a g and t - ordered a curry (thinking this will only take 45mins tops ) and broke out the tools. Predictably things did not go smoothly. Drive side crank threads were stripped. I tried various forum ideas on the subject - blowtorch, penetrating spray, hitting it in a variety of ways, riding around with the bolts off. Curry arrived. Shit then got a bit more ‘invasive’ hacksaw, Mole grips and my new pride and joy dewalt drill. Because it was an old chain set with rivets I had to snap the rings off using the mole grips and brute force. Then I hacksawed and drilled the fuck out of the alloy to make a slot into which I could get a screwdriver in to prize the bugger apart. Gradually it started to wiggle and then, bingo. Couple of pics for any perverts out there into this kinda filfth. Wierd old school cartridge bb situation then discovered - presume fitted in 94- plastic (or maybe glassfibre ?) cup on the drive side - steel on the non drive. Much effort to remove.

TLDR - The headlines are; felt a bit burnt out - didn't do much bike - installed BB - took apart rear wheel hub - ordered new wheelset + other bits. Kids ill so no school run needs this morn. Bike seat fitted to wife-bike as a stop gap. Revised deadline - end of week. - Maybe.
Well. Mrs Shep was off to Brum to meet a friend on Sat leaving me with the troops. I did some moderate to poor parenting for a couple of hours and then palmed them off on the G'parents. Cycled home and the real plan was to get in the garden to work on the deck that I started building in June and has allegedly ...'taken way longer than I thought and we should have just got a man in..'.... So a swift cuppa and on with the boots and thermals...
Except after the tea I just could not bring myself to go outside - generally felt whack and defo not up to sawing joists. The Marin was sitting in the hall so (even though i really just wanted to have a nap) i forced myself to the toolbox.First order of biz was the BB - on friday at 6am i Amazon primed a UN55 - which (almost unbelievably) arrived before I got home from work the same day. I do feel for the poor warehouse slaves....buuuuuut.....
Anyway. I was worried about the BB install as the threads were looking less than ideal, but I used all my powers of restraint to caress the cups . It worked time will tell if i ballsed it up. Really hope my chainline maths is right.
Then disassembled the shonky rear hub - unbranded cup and cone job. Cleaned it out - the cones were pitted, the BBs seemed to be silver on one side and kinda gold on the other - gold ones pitted. cup surfaces - pitted - stupidly I ploughed on thinking ...'this green grease from Condor was well expensive - im sure it will improve it ...' regreased liberally and reassembled. Rough as guts. Not surprising considering its carried 3-5 yr olds up and down a hill 5 days a week for two years with no maintenance.
At this point I gave up - wife was on the way home and I spent the rest of the afternoon cleaning up and lying on the sofa ordering bits. New Deore wheelset, unecessary nitto seatpost and turbo inbound.
2/4 Sheps got proper ill on Sunday - thankfully just fevers not vom - but nothing achieved. Spent Sunday night watching last weeks episode of Gardeners World, with a largish scotch, ham sandwich and feeling of wistful melancholy. Wonder if Monty's got a bike....

Stripped all the peeling decals and gave the frame a thorough going over with the scratch remover compound - has definitely seen to a little of the rust and given the paint some life. Vintage Deore cranks fitted along with the superstar ring as suggested by @t0-ster - pleased to note these are cnc’d in the UK 🇬🇧. Quite liking the stone chip patina on the tubes. Also headset stripped and degreased- worn but in reasonable nick considering nearly 25yrs old. LBS sadly mystified by the idea of 22mm rim tape and certainly not in stock so back to the internets for that I guess...

Minor progress - super crap image as proof of concept, tape and smart-sams fitted to the new deore/ryde sputnik wheelset which look bombproof and a massive upgrade on the 'trubuild' efforts previously. Tyres no where near as massive as imagined which is a bit of a relief (re. clearance)
Fitted headset but needs adjustment. Sploshed a bit of Kurust on worst rusty bits to stabilise - will go in with some clear enamel tonight. Then I guess i need to look at fitting the mudguards shudder

Grrr update. Fancy deore v brakes do not fit on the 90s canti bosses. The 'shoulder' (i'm calling it the shoulder) ie, the thicker section of the boss that seats into the brake arm is too long. Or in-fact it would seem the Deore arm 'wells' are a-typically shallow. Shitty Clarks efforts fit, parts bin 'promax' ones fit too - until I got over zealous with the spanner-ing and squished one fucker on too tight. I can't expain why i did this. it was late, whiskey had been had. Destroyed brake arm in order to remove. excellent.

Decided something about the turbo is wrong - in contrast with the bullmoose and fat tires - too 90s I think - imagine that.
So the basis for this project is a Marin Stinson. My dad bought it in 1994 and commuted on it for many years, my brother had it for a bit a few years back and left it locked up on Exmouth market where it was driven into by a road sweeper. It survived but the natty colour matching stem/bar combo was bent tf. It languished in the back of my office for a while until two years ago when I moved out to the burbs and needed something functional to ferry kids to nursery etc. Being skint on account of the house move I threw some Clark’s v brakes, a basic hybrid wheel set and some marathons on it - strapped on the kiddie seat and off we went. Two years later it’s high time for a reboot. Parts have been ordered...bullmooses were first to arrive...
