I doubt we’ll be seeing him again. Probably best just to keep an eye on the local news.
@abr, it wasn’t stolen, he was a quite well-dressed guy in his late 30’s. Albeit one with no idea of basic engineering principles.
Customer comes into the shop with a Specialized hybrid, alu frame. Someone has tried to wrench the d-lock off and has completely bolloxed the top tube about 5cm from the seat tube. For reasons still unknown, the owner takes a hacksaw and cuts out the damaged section and wheels it in to us.
Owner: Can this be fixed?”
Me: Um, no. Sorry.
C: Is it still safe to ride?
M: Sorry?
C: Is it still safe to ride?
silence while I take this in
C: What’s the worst that can happen?
M: For real? Seriously?
C: Yeah!
M: Well if you’re lucky it’ll break slowly while you’re stationary and you’ll be ok. If you’re not so lucky it’ll fold up while you’re passing a bus, the stem/bar will hit you in the face and you’ll end up under a car.
C: Nah, it’ll be ok if I just ride it slowly.
He takes the bike out and rides off on it, a diamond frame with no top tube. I’m still dumbfounded.
