I didn't buy new cranks, just swapped with a pair from another bike I already had. If it doesn't solve the problem I'll buy some thinner VP pedals off Planet X.
I used SPDs for years but I'm never going back now I've seen the flat pedal light. And reflectors are a must for me too, I know from driving at night that they make more of a difference to visibility even than many rear lights.
