I’m blown away. Thank you all.
I think we’re more than there. Kids bikes are maybe less than this anyway. But at least I can get her a helmet and some lights too now.
I’ll get researching for a suitable bike. Are we thinking then that a bit-too-big adult ladies frame is not a good idea even though she’ll grow into it and it may last longer?
Where my family lives is quite a small village but the surrounding area is very rural with lots of walking paths and woods so something fat tyre compatible would be ideal. Her brother is getting my neighbour’s lad’s old mountain bike for Christmas. Whilst she’s not going to care about mountain biking, something that can go where that can go would be the best. -

I am hoping we raise enough for a bike for now and can put a lump sum in an account for her for later to buy a grown up bike.

and amazingly, she wants to get back on a bike.
Inspiring attitude.

Donated. Have 2 little ones and the thought of this happening to them makes me shudder. Hope Amey gets a cracking bike and more to help with recovery.

£400 for this full bike inc hydro brakes. Says suitable from 5ft on the size chart. She’s about 4”9 now I think but it might work and last for quite some time?
Better off with a 10-12yo kids bike? -

The fact it’s a 29er might be an issue with a 10 year old. Something with 26” wheels would be more manageable for her I think, but there’s not many out there.
Frog do a range of mtb’s, which have 26” wheels, shorter cranks and smaller brake levers. This one is good;

There's always this option.....

If she's a bit insecure on the bike after the crash I'd go for something that will fit her straight away just to build confidence. It's easier to ride a slightly too small bike than a slightly too big one.
And as she's "only" 11 a full-size bike will be heavy for her and hard to ride on trails and mud

That's a pretty good shout. It sounds like she's just tall enough to be coming off 24" wheels, but 700c/29ers would be too big. I reckon that something with 26" wheels and fairly fat tyres would be perfect, possibly with suspension, but only if it is not too heavy.
Incidentally 140mm cranks on that Frog is unusual. Even for 24" wheel bike cranks are usually specced at 170mm and at least to 157mm.
@PhilDAS, does she have a favourite colour?

Donated. Awful thing to happen but it sounds like she's dealing with it like a champion.
Maybe edit the opening post to put the gofundme link in there? Would make it easier to find.

Is there any way to give your niece some input on this? Like, surprise with 'hey we are going to get you a new bike here is the fund' and then go through the process of choosing the bike together with your sound advice. Just a thought.
-
• #66
Yes probably wise, I just don’t think she knows or cares much about what the bike looks like or how heavy it is etc. Those things will certainly make a difference but she won’t know that.
Once I’ve got a few examples, I can show her mum and see what we’ll do -

Perhaps you choose the bike and then get helmet and accessories together?

I'd be happy to donate the Raleigh frame I've got for sale atm - it's pretty small? Also may be worth having a word with Evans as they may do a bit of discount, you never know.

Glad to hear she is healing up and I'm up for a donation to get a bike. well done forum,

Donated. Hope she loves the bike!

I have, thank you. I'm just not sure. They may be quality but the components look cheap for the price. Maybe not though

Isla bike are the best. Just get one of them.
-

Isla bikes are good though the rear mech hanger is very soft and gets bent easily if it is knocked. On the other hand, they can easily be bent back in to place too.
I think Frog bikes are good; I know schools that have a stock of them and they seem to last year after year. I think for most children either one would be more than good enough. -
