  • I have a quick question - is that the normal size rando bag? how do you keep it attached to your rack?

  • @Cupcakes cheers! You're new build is a much more sensible way of doing things and I can see myself going the same way down the line, but for now I want to keep tinkering with the surly. I think the end result will be some adaptation of the current drop outs - with adjustable disc mount positions. Looking forward to seeing how it comes out.

  • It's the bigxtop barbag actually, I just stopped using the klikfix mounting system. I bought some generic webbing and clips from ebay or somewhere and just made my own straps for either side - it held it well enough! Some sturdy plastic in the base might help it keep shape.

Then when it was in the basket I just used elastic webbing to keep it strapped down. Hope that helps!

  • That's ace thanks. The klikfix is really irritating, so looking at going to the basket option, plus then i can carry other sized things! Thanks for the advice.

p.s. it is on cupcakes old crosscheck!

  • Klikfix did me well on tour - you can see it in the first few pages of this thread, but it's definitely not pretty!

I saw in current projects misc you're after a rack solution - if yours doesn't work out consider the sjs canti rack, they're solid enough.

Post up the cc when it's done!

  • It is generally ok, it is just if the going gets rough it bounces around a bit more than I am happy with. Or did you find a way to avoid that?
The rack solution is that I have a rack - but need it to work with the wheel.

I was thinking about the SJS canti rack to support the bigxtop bag. Photo of my cc in the surly thread a month or so ago, nearly done now though.

  • Nope, it stayed bouncy. I toured mostly on nice american roads though, so wasn't an issue. The bike looks great.

  • So, wheels.

There will be 5, and they will be suitably un-sexy and budget conscious for one of my builds.

Wheels 1 & 2: £60 disc wheelset from planet x, 700c, for cross over the winter

Wheel 3: Shimano dynamo to wtb i23 650b, silver spokes
    Wheel 4: 130mm fixed/free sturmey archer to wtb i23 650b, silver spokes
Wheel 5: 10sp shimano rear to wtb i23 650b, silver spokes

What spokes should I be looking at?

  • ^ what they said! I just built up a few wheels using those spokes. No issues.

  • I'm back from my holiday, progress has been made.

    No going back now...

    Same colour, but matte
    Oooohhhh

The initial plan was to house the disk mounts between the chainstays and seatstays but there were some issues getting everything to fit. Their placement meant losing an original rack mount but another was added, lower down so I can still access the chain tension threads.

These pics are all I've seen, so I'm really excited to pick it up this week! Have ordered a chinese carbon fork, wheels and a headset. Need to get myself a single spyre brake and some rotors, and it should all come together.

  • No brace?

  • I did ask, but he didn't seem concerned! Now I am again though

  • 26" MTB fork is here. Less rake and 25mm extra a-c than the original, so let's see what difference that makes. Feels really solid, so I'm happy.

Cheap planetx wheels are here too, to get me up and running before I miss too much cx for the season.

  • Collected tonight. I'm so excited about this. The fork doesn't seem to have made much of a change at all, which is good news. The wheel didn't really fit into the ends, so I filed them a tiny bit and it goes in now.

I promise promise promise to actually cut this steerer.

  • Looks great and the new fork suits it very well!

  • bumble beeeeeeeee. looks great

  • Thanks both! I haven't been this excited by one of my own bikes in a long while.

Initial build will be pretty unexciting - back to sscx

  • To decal or not to decal? I had intended on it

  • Decal, but not the full set. Maybe dt, ht, and tt.

  • Started re-assembling this. Wish I could justify buying some new bits (stem, seatpost, etc) for it, mine are tired but functional and I can't justify the cost really.

  • Well used parts make it all the more interesting

  • Looks great. Can i ask who did the disc tabs? Been thinking about doing the same to mine, although my current mullet set up works well enough so not sure I should bother.

  • Looking good so far. Keen for the finished build pics.
