I felt the need.

check if your telly has a digital audio output - then you can get a cheap DAC and run the audio back into your amp.
This is what I do as I'm not worried about 'pure' audio quality when watching TV/Movies but don't want to use my telly's shite internal speaker. 2 channel only.
The other advantage of doing it this way is you negate any latency problems. -

Tell me more about this cheap DAC solution. We got a new TV, it sounds shit.
But Hi-fi wise I am old school just turntable and amp. The amp has spare inputs so this will be a good solution.
Any cheap DAC recommendations for this guys? -

put him on ignore?
-
• #5133
No. I am frustrated with how doing what I want is proving difficult to me.

I'll pass (not out of snobbery) but my audio visual upgrading is well down the line!
I may even just crumble and buy a smart telly. And an apple tv.
Dreams of one box + one screen = simplicity + one remote are shattering.

Plan to get a Beam this Friday, will update ya...

damo - does you monitor have audio out?
(hopefully i am not being thick here)
can you not take something like a halide DAC into a line in of an amp with a phono? one box
it's exactly what i do, but with an imac, not a monitor.
-
• #5138
I don't have the monitor yet....
I'm still at the "annoying the fuck out of everyone with my brain chat" stage
rather than the "
"annoying the fuck out of everyone with pictures of my set up" stage -

You have literally no idea what you are doing, do you?
-
• #5140
Sorry, just checked in the parts bin and I must have sold the DACs with the Jogglers.

I live on the other side of the world, I got mine for 30 bucks from Jaycar, but you don't have that. Toslink -> RCA, I'm sure you can find something from Amazon for whatever.
Something like this, first thing I googled

That's not quite true.
I know what I want. I have been given options.
- Just buy a fucking telly
- Just buy a monitor with an audio out
- Just buy a monitor and then buy a TosLink
- Just buy a monitor and an old apple tv with the rca out and run the risk of not getting the right apps/new apps
- Just buy a new telly, a new amp, throw your record player out, sell your records for buttons, welcome to pipe and slippers and sky.
- Just buy a fucking telly

even a headphone port into the amp would work

Dude, it's Black Friday. Buy a fucking tele.
My Samsung smart jobbie has the following apps:
iPlayer, ITV, C4 and C5.
Now TV
Netflix
Amazon Prime video
Google Play video.Of these, all are great apart from ITV and C4 which are wank. Freeview can has you covered there.
Only thing missing is Eurosport. You can Chromecast that if you need it.
My Virgin TV box and contract is really only useful for recording things. Could easily live without it.

Get a smart TV and a Chromecast dongle.
And an amp with a phono stage and speakers (You must have these already?)
Sorted.

@Chalfie
Given that you don't own the Apple TV or a screen yet (but I assume you own an amp and speakers):- Buying a TV is a lot cheaper than a computer monitor as the resolution requirements are lower. Even a 4K tv can be bought for around £500. A second hand 40" HD TV will be around £250. A serious computer monitor of any decent size will be way more than that.
- A monitor is going to be too small. 40" is the minimum size you want to be thinking about for TV viewing as you're normally further from the screen.
- Assuming you have decided on ATV as the video source then you'll have to suck up the fact that this means more than one box. Most of the time these boxes are small. I use Gorilla tape and stick them to the back of my TV screen so that my space is uncluttered.
- If you don't need the new features of ATV4 (games, Plex) then get an ATV3 for £40 as it has an optical audio out. you will need a optical (Toslink) to RCA adapter. I just posted a link to one this morning. Otherwise yo need a HDMI to RCA. One was posted a few pages back when this question was asked recently.
Edit: what @mashton said
Preferably don't TYPE IN CAPS and perhaps think a bit more about what information you actually need (and how to frame that question) before posting...

Yes. Yes it is. But you know, given the way people chuck money around on here about all sorts of other bollocks, does it matter?A monitor is going to be too small. 40" is the minimum size you want to be thinking about for TV viewing as you're normally further from the screen.
Yes. I've come to this point too. >£500 for a >40 inch (excuse the use of non SI units, but strangely we all still use them don't we?) is a bit ouch. Also: I've looked at the distance charts and screen size, so I'm calibrated there thanks.Assuming you have decided on ATV as the video source then you'll have to suck up the fact that this means more than one box. Why more than one box? this bit confuses me? I was under the impression, iplayer, itunes, amazon prime/netflix, now tv as the apps on there. For which I have thanked everyone, probably JB and skinny actually when we started this off about a month ago. The point being I'd quite like not be running loads of little power drains, and links and stuff like that.
Most of this chat has happened between me and mashton, which is probably a bit taking over and I'm sorry for clogging up the arteries of your information pipeline to some sweet audiophile discussion with inanity. Mostly, I was bemoaning (to someone I know, well, multiple people actually) about how what could be simple is becoming overly annoying.
Much like life really. -

Thats all cool man, but do you have a question or some information to share? Can you do that without shouting or being passive aggressive?
So in light of this, if I want to upgrade my av receiver. Whats the suggestion? Seems like a lot of Onkyo and Denon receivers with hdcp2.2
Where should I look?
Speaking of which, anyone can help with lost music? Particularly 90s/00s dance and rock? I fucked up and deleted my entire library.
