I believe 4700 shifters need a 4700 RD due to differing gear cable pull-ratio.

Yep - set-up doesn't quite sync. have tried it myself.

What Pifko said.
http://productinfo.shimano.com/#/com/3.7?types=road&cid=C-453&acid=C-454Annoyingly, the old Tiagra 4600 had a different cable pull, which means it is compatible with a greater variety of RDs, including the 5700 one you've got...

Need to shift the 5700 RD?...

thanks for the helpful advice everyone.......sourced another Tiagra and hopefully all will be good! will most likely put the 105 derailleur on a winter project, thanks again

For reasons best known to themselves, Shimano made the cable pull ratio of the latest 10 speed Tiagra the same as 11 speed Shimano, thus incompatible with any older Shimano 10 speed mechs or shifters.

This may be the wrong place to ask but follows the theme of mix and match -- do 5700 (105 10 spd shifters) work with 4600 (FD and RDs)?

Yes I believe so.
I've damaged the rear derailleur on my Tiagra (RD 4701) ten speed road bike, I've sourced a replacement derailleur this being a Shimano 105 (RD5700) but am having a job to tune in the gears so that they index correctly, they'll either change upwards cleanly but not downwards cleanly or vice versa, can anyone advise if the pull on the gear lever is different from one groupset to another? thanks
