  • Hi all,

Firstly let me apologise for A: my absence and B; not explaining the reason for it sooner.

Unfortunately, the Cycle Crime Taskforce was disbanded formally late last year as the priorities for TFL funded units (like ours) shifted from offences such as pick pocketing and theft of cycles toward serious youth violence and safeguarding of children and vulnerable people.

This was a frustrating development for the team here, many of whom have spent the last few years investigating cycle theft and attempting to assist in its prevention. We spent some time lobbying for our remit to be reverted to cover cycle crime, but it remains with those mentioned above.
As I'm sure you will understand, I have my own opinion which will remain my own.

If your bicycle has been stolen, this will be reported and investigated by one of your local teams.

  • Thanks for the effort by your team and yourself, we much appreciate it.

The cut is unfortunate and I hope things have been sorted out for a new role.

There's nothing much I could do other than to my MP and a letter will be in the box later today.

All the best and yeah, stay on the forum and don't be a stranger!

  • Thanks for your and the team's work, Kieran. I thought something like that may have happened. Let's hope the unit becomes reinstated, perhaps when the funding situation changes for the better again.

  • Bit of a corporate answer but:

I often read stories where the victims of theft/fraud confront the suspects and sometimes manage to retrieve their possessions. I would urge people to think twice before contacting/confronting these people as it can have tragic consequences but to contact the police with the information.

That said, I do recognise the strain the Police service are under and can only apologise that the service which is needed cannot always be provided but no bike is worth serious injury or death.

  • I understand your difficulties in telling it as it is, as opposed to what you are allowed to say.....I have the same worries sometimes!
The fact remains though, that stealing a bike is against the law, yet time after time, no action is taken by the people who are responsible for upholding the law. I know it's not the rank and file who make these decisions, and I know it's not the senior officer's fault, for having to make cuts, due to the Tories insistance on creating permanent solutions for temporary problems.
At the same time, I can absolutely understand how people take the matter (law) into their own hands.
If it's yellow, has a bill and goes quack, it's probably a duck. If that duck nicks my bike, and I can have a go at getting it back, it better be a double hard duck.

  • Thanks, Kieran--obviously no apology required. I've followed this work for nearly twenty years and have seen numerous stop-start attempts end before they could take proper root in police work. Often it was the initiative of individual officers, and usually there were significant successes, before such work was derailed again by some kind of reallocation of funding/budget squeezes/officers moving on etc. There's no doubt in my mind that the Cycle Crime Task Force was the best such effort yet and I just hope that there will be a future for it and that those who worked on it will maintain their enthusiasm for tackling these problems in the possible event of it being re-established, so that all the learning isn't lost. Thanks for your work.

  • Update to give others hope. Thanks to heads up from @Indexed just got down to Brick Lane to find my bike. Turns out the guy had decided to keep this for himself and it wasn't actually for sell. Managed to blag a test ride and didn't look back! Thanks again @Indexed and I hope you get yours back.

  • That’s great! Well done that man.

  • Sorry to hear that, George, hope you get it back.

  • Trusty steed, was nicked in Bethnal Green a few weeks back. Not many of these about so if anybody comes across it please hit me up. Pic is from when it was new so a bit less shiny and new looking.

  • Is there anywhere to mention shop break ins? There's been a ridiculous amount recently, with massive stock being taken. Almost all of the shops have released a list of bikes stolen, so might be worth keeping an eye out for things whilst you're browsing.

  • This Seven with Woundups looks rather suspicious to me. Anyone lost one?

  • Boooo. My housemate's Specialized Crux (yellow to blue fade) was just stolen from outside The Red Lion in Leytonstone.

It's a pretty jazzy paintjob so if anyone sees it IRL or online please DM me on Instagram (@scoot__) because I'll see it quicker.

  • My On One Pickenflick was stolen around 10am today outside the Royal London Hospital, Dental Car Park
Parked under CCTV in broad daylight, had an Abus Granit D lock but looks grinded through, thieves clearly still had all the time to give the lock a few cracks

Decals removed apart from 'Pickenflick' - SRAM Rival 22 HRD - Hunt Disc Wheels

  • Anyone had a grey Cervelo stolen? Just seen a guy riding along the bottom of Kingsland Road on one who was clearly not the owner.
