  • Cool. Actually 'tis the other way around, 82-84 Squiers are entirely Japanese built and assembled, but certain ones (some Strats only, never Teles or basses) are thought to have used US-made pickups... the ones with the red-lacquered bobbin wire, or so says 21frets.com, which is the Squier oracle. Shame it's a heavy one. Pics?

  • I'm sure you know this, but that would be one of the earliest Japanese Squiers. Fender reintroduced the brand when they bought out a load of Japanese clone manufacturers to stop them copying their guitars (Gibson tried to sue them out of existence instead I think).

Interesting guitar - I think some of them have some value. History here:

  • It only has half a serial number as the original owner scratched out the ‘squire’. It starts with an E so I know it was made between 84-87 (sorry not 81-84) in Japan. I’ll post a few pics after work

  • I hate strats

Yeah, well maybe active indifference rather than hate. I haven't had a strat in ten years and I just got an Am deluxe strat (hss) in trade, don't quite know what to make of it. On the plus side it has funky bumper car "metallic sunset" finish.

  • Here’s the amp. It’s dusty but in great condition.

  • Here’s the squire strat. Totally forgot the previous owner must have modified it with the humbucker. See the headstock... I can only make out half the serial number E6XXXX0

  • Cool old Squier, E6 is '86. Neck position quite an unusual spot to add a humbucker... previous owner an Elliott Randall fan maybe....

  • Fantastic looking guitar - really characterful.

  • Love it!

  • Thanks, she stays in a case under my bed now. I like the idea of doing it up in the future. My favourite bit is the original Starwars sticker.

  • did we decide which was the best micro amp for kid friendly volume noodling?

  • I'm sure you've all seen this, but its absolute gold if you're a Blur fan... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aYN_VIbLkKw

  • I’m very happy with my Yamaha thr-5. Played with high gain till late last night, asked the lady this morning if she heard anything... nope

  • At the risk of having my Guitar Nerds Anonymous membership revoked I have a query (at least it's not another Ibanez (: ) ;

I've been thinking about getting rid of my small tube amps and going for a modelling solution...
Has anyone any experience with any of the newer amp/ effect modelling floor units? Specifically the Fractal AX8 and Boss GT-1000 have caught my eye. There is also the Line 6 Helix which is well reviewed but I've never found Line 6 sounds to be my cup of tea...

I had been thinking about going for a rack mount Fractal AxeFX-II but the AX8 is about half the price and foot switchable albeit with some compromises on CPU power and a few features less.

    Anyone?

I'm kind of in love with this Ibanez Prestige FR on Reverb.com at the moment too though...

Used to belong to Brent Rambler from August Burns Red. Obviously needs passive pickups...

  • My amp is going this weekend and I’m after a small tube amp. Blackstar HT-1R still a good bet?

  • All the cool kids are getting Kemper gear... I think they're mad, but what do I know?

In other news, I know two people who've bought Quilter heads in the last six months who've switched back to their old rigs... #justsayin

  • You'll also need a chrome finish EGC baritone... Obvs...

  • Kemper is nice too although mucho spendy and not as practical as the floor mount options I feel...

To be honest I've done a fair amount with a Fractal AxeFX-II before and I've been extremely happy with the results, their emulation of a Carol-Ann is probably my favourite thing I've ever played through.

Just keen to hear if anyone had any other recommendation?

  • Googles "Chrome EGC Baritone"...

    Oh... 😐

  • So on trend... Tho' I've heard bad things about Kramer headstocks folding up...

  • Hadn't heard that before but I don't know that it would be my cup of tea anyway. I do love the whole Shellac/ Albini sound though...

On the subject of obscure/ cheap/ cool guitars...
