Happened yesterday when returning from an interview (we both work for a large print and online media company) when he made the comments. I don't particularly like the guy, but now his true colours have been shown, I'll avoid all bar professional communication.
As for the HR route, it will be a his word against mine situation, and moved to the too hard basket with the likely outcome counseling, and a target on my head.
Just really disappointed I didn't call him on it at the time, and it's been gnawing at me since.

It's worth considering that you might not be the only one to go to HR with a report of racism from this guy. It might be his word against yours plus one or more others. Or it might be the first time, but then he might get reported by someone else in the future and he will already have had your report on file.

Yeah sometimes it's weird that when you're alone with someone it feels harder to call them out - even if it seems a private word should be preferable - just because you know there'll probably be a bunch of silent tension and uncomfortable eye contact. When you're in a group even if they all inexplicably turn around and back the other person at least there's more dialogue and the tension is shared between more people.
Sad that you would get a target on your head; do you mean from other people in the office or that your HR dept would mark you as an agitator? -
how about.....

Had that recently. An older colleague who I've always liked suddenly pops his gasket and starts ranting about bloody feminists and not being allowed to use the n-word about black people anymore. Total wtf moment. Just us two in the room. I just walked out at the time, had to mull it over. Talked to him a few days later, can't say things are ok but I felt better for having done it.
Was this very recent? If you like him at all I think there's still a window to go back to him and say 'by the way that was unacceptable, if I hear that again from you I will take action'. If you just generally think he's a prick grass him up to HR and don't feel bad about it.
