Not if fixie and strong core.
How is this different from genuine brakless™ ?
-
• #10481
Yes, but you can control that. For example, you can take this picture on a quiet back lane in Cambridge with no traffic. Having no brakes is just having no brakes.
Luckily, I found that in London, the percentage of morons who use a brakeless bike in actual traffic is really really low. I see quite a few FGs every day, and some of them go as far as having 2 brakes!

It's a brake, it works. Front brakes are the important ones, if you can actually use them and don't immediately go over the bars.

Saw a guy around Islington the other week, fixed brakeless, flat pedals, no straps. He didn’t skid once. The lights changed ahead of us and even at a moderate speed he was flexing all over the shop trying to slow down. Why?
Without wanting to sound like a proper old git, I rode and raced fixed for years, and commuted daily on one. I wouldn’t dream of riding one without a front brake.

Well, hands off bars does make it temporarily brakeless....
In the same way that with one brake like that then signalling right means being temporarily brakeless.
Which I give no shits about btw.
Me neither, each to their own, but I'd never do it personally. I want two brakes as I've had brake cables snap before and I'd never want to have to rely on leg braking when I really needed it (especially on some descent somewhere outside central Londonton).

Yup, then you're fucked. But at least it takes an actual failure for that to happen.
That's the thing - W H Y ?
It makes no bloody sense at all. Having a brake doesn't mean you can't do 'sick stunts' or whatever the kids say these days. Skid if you want to, it's fun. But then, when you really really need to stop quickly, you have the means to do so.
The idea of riding a track bike in its track configuration on the road to me is as retarded as taking a Nascar vehicle on public roads. If it was only a risk for the idiots themselves, ok, they can try to kill themselves if they insist. But there's other people out there, and there's really no excuse for potentially ruining someone's season just because they are above having something as essential as a brake on their bike while out in traffic. It's just mental to me.

A good point - and the main reason why I switched to having two levers both actuating the front brake. Now I can do whatever with one arm and still have full braking control with the other.

It's kind of like watching a dumpster fire though- ignore coming in a couple of weeks when the novelty dies off.

Really interesting to hear some views on whether fixed/brakeless is a good idea or not - keep it up!

Hey I thought this thread was titled 'I hate', so I wrote down something I hate, for a specific reason at that time. If others feel the need to start arguing the point, I will definitely stand by my opinion.

There's a tonne of brakless threads already. I hate when people don't use the more specific of threads for their stuff.
I hate lack of merge.
I hate bartenders sampling my cocktails. I paid for that, motherfucker, sample your own while you practice and you can fuck off with the two small straws thing too.

Like, I ride brakless and no hands all the time. My no hand whip skids. You should see them.
