  • Thanks.
    The Gore that I linked?

  • Yes the one you can't get anymore.

  • Last year I was around Bristol and visited the rapha outlet store. Picked up a hardshell for £130. Best jacket Ive had for the winter season. I would say its good up to around 8-10c. It is a very warm jacket so even on days like today, I would have the zip down a touch to allow more ventilation.

  • Any idea's on a fully waterproof parka that isnt army surplus? Ideally wanting to spend less than £100

I find I'm wearing my MW Orion for rainy dog walks and whilst it's perfect for on the bike, the cut is not as casual as I'd like for off the bike.

  • Hoping for some input from a dead thread...

I have been having troubles wtih my Berghaus wasterproof jacket stops being waterproof... I spoke to Berghaus directly a couple of times and they said I can send it back to them directly anytime withing a reaonsable time frame, the jacket is not yet 3 years old and they will inspect and take actions - repair, replace, give me vouchers to spend on their e-store etc.

Finally, I decided to pack it and send it today, called them again to check address is still correct only to be told that they, as the manufacturer does not deal with warranty and told me to go back to Blacks where I bought it... of course Blacks being Blacks does not give a shit and told me anything they sell only comes with a 1 - 2 years warranty. After insisting they send the jacket back to Berghaus for me, they took it in reluctantly... So my questions are:

Who dose deal with any warranty issue? Berghaus or Blacks?

Is under 3 years for a £170 Gore Tex material jacket reaonably not old? I know jackets like this come with a reasonable lifetime warranty, and to me 3 years is pretty young for a jacket of this level.

I have only ever washed and proofed it using Nikwax, so I doubt it was me who's caused it to stop working...

Anyone has had success, have actually been bothered to send their jackets back for warranty claims?

*the back of the jacket stays dry because my backpack got soaking wet...

  • Bullshit from blacks. Warranty is ALWAYS with the retailer, never manufacturer.

You're covered under EU law for 6 years. Consumer rights act 2015.

Get a letter off to head office.

Goretex is under warrenty for the 'useful life' of the product too.

  • @ExTra Do you think the waterproofing broke? Were you just riding along and the jacket stopped working without warning?

  • I am not sure how and when it's stopped working TBH. All I know is that it won't even keep me dry from Camberwell to Elephant and Castle, so by the time I get to my office in King's X, I am soaking wet... I get more dry without the jacket... It's been like this for a while and I have tried at least twice to reproof it with no change whatsoever.

@skinny, thanks, will see what Blacks says in a few days time, I have a feeling they will just send me back the jacket without explaination abotu what they have (or have not) done.

  • I have a Goretex jacket for heavy rain winter days but for general rides or say sub sixty miles these Planet X AGU Secco condom jackets are great value for money, pack up in to their own little pouch at the collar, keep the rain out and are light enough, not brilliant at breathability but good enough.
I always figure you are going to be a bit wet from sweating or leakage but if you are still warm what the heck.

  • So I have heard back from Blacks today and they said my Berghaus Paclite has indeed got a material fault, so they are willing to replace it ish. They said they will refund me the purchase price, which was £90, because I bought it at the last days of sale so it was reduced from £150 - £110 - £90. Or they would give me a like to like repalcement.

Now the problem is, they don't seem to sell the women's paclite anymore, or at least not at the moment, so the chances are I wouldn't get the same jacket, and if I want anything else, I'd have to make up the difference. And here is the slight problem, £90 is unlikely to get me a jacket of the same level if they weren't doing a mega sale... so I would be willing to go up to about £120 thereabout, any suggestions from any of these 80 choices??

    Thanks a lot.

  • Slight turn of direction.....

Patagonia Torrentshell is one of the best coats on the market, especially if you can get it cheaper by serching around on the Web. I picked up a black non stretch kind fir £55 .

Sure it's not a true cycling cut but then I am a fully paid up member of the FBNPNA gang.

  • Gonna bump this thread - looking for a cheapish packable jacket in a race fit. I mainly wear a Gabba in the rain so it's more for getting caught out in the spring summer, chilly coffee stops and for descents and rain storms in Mallorca or Nice.

I bought a Sportful Hotpack last year and have lost it, even if I found it I wouldn't fit it anymore!

  • Have a Gore Tex jacket that doesn't bead anymore, have reproofed it a few times with different products, spoke to LSR who would test it and reproof it for £38 but sounded like they would do what I have done already

Just wondering if anyone could recommend a waterproof jacket with pit zips if possible, Patagonia jackets are too big in my size and then not long enough in the arms when sizing down.

  • north face or marmot and some mountain hardware . have had all and liked all of them - berghaus seem to have lost it for these days and some other brands are far too expensive for what you get.

  • I have an Arcteryx Zeta (goretex) which I would recommended. Has large pit zips.

I am 6' 3" and wear a medium, which fits well when riding (long arms and back).

  • Thanks for that, I am the same height as you so will have a look at that. What size chest?

  • Cotswolds have packable trousers/jackets that fit much less baggy than other cheap waterproofs for £15 each. Keeping me dry as a courier atm

  • Do you guys wash your waterproof jackets with your normal clothes? I normally use non bio washing liquid and wash my clothes at 30 degrees anyway... Been thinking it seems a bit of a waste of water and effort to wash a single jacket on its own...

  • I try to keep them separate even used a bucket. Mrs B doesn't like the fact she has to buy Non Bio.

  • I was mine separately with Grangers performance wash.

    https://grangers.co.uk/products/performance-wash

  • I use Simple bar soap and wash them by hand, a few items at once. I remember reading something about normal laundry detergents potentially damaging waterproof coatings, don't know if that's true.

  • Only the bio one though, normal non bio ones shouldn't...

  • Anything similar to Rapha Commuter Jacket, but more affordable and available?

  • A proper wash is too damaging in my experience. I've practically ruined jackets before washing them, even with proper nikwax etc.
Now I just wash any dirt off with a wet cloth when/if needed.

  • It’s usually the spin cycle that damages them. When I wash mine I select “no spin” on the machine.
