We replaced all the rads in our flat when we moved in with these style and they've been great. Not too expensive either.

Did you worry about BTU? I’m lost with that...
-
• #26055
Nope, just replaced what was there with the same size. More modern (shit) looking radiators will kick out more heat so it depends if you've got big spaces to warm up.

Recommendation for gutter cleaning services? I don't like heights.

You take that back. My rads are new, have btu for dayz, and look alright.

There are calculators online - they are conservative.
Personally I'd get modern because more heat less space.

I do need some advice re: keeping two rooms, with children in, warm overnight without rinsing my heating.
Thermovalves on all rads.
Mobile thermostat.Is it:
a) move the mobile thermo into coolest room, turn down all other thermovalves in house overnight
b) buy small space heaters
c) rip out the central space, install a massive burner, and heat the house that way
d) move
e) solar reflectivity
f) bunsen burner
g) something elseyours in need of a night's sleep undisturbed by a cold child.

My dad's advice of PUT A FUCKING JUMPER ON has always served me well.
-
• #26062
Yeah. I advise that too.
And for my kids it's fine. UNTIL THEY'RE ASLEEP.
AND THE OLDEST ONE KICKS THEIR QUILT OFF AND CAN'T FIND IT AND IT IS FUCKING COLD IN THAT ROOM ACTUALLY.
The smallest one sleeps in a sleep bag.You wait.

Also dinosaurs and chat about dinosaurs isn't always fun when you're dressed for arctic conditions.

Small electric heater with a thermostat on a timer?
Just make sure it can't set the carpet on fire.
running a dehumidifier on the same floor keeps things feeling much warmer. And dryer.

Plug in oil radiator chucks out a lot of heat, our was about £80 or so. Probably costs a few quid to run though.
-
• #26066
Thats some wise words... only prob is I have no idea where to find nice modern ones... all the ones I find online are "designer" which usually means gross chrome and big flat panels.

Large bulldog clips to attach the duvet case to the bed, thus preventing inadvertent incidents of somnabulistic de-insulising.

Sheets and blankets didn’t do me any harm as a kid.
-
• #26072
best and most cost effective bet is traditional style sheet and a blanket/duvet tucked in so they can't throw it off too easily.

What are your windows like? Any scope to seal drafts?

How cold does it actually get? We need data!

I remember talking to some bloke who was talking about engineering solutions and problems they had with forklifts having their motors burnt out with people sticking them into reverse to stop. At considerable cost they tried, and failed, to design a control system that would prevent this from happening.
It turned out the solution was to tell the workers to stop fucking doing it or else it's a disciplinary offence.
