We replaced all the rads in our flat when we moved in with these style and they've been great. Not too expensive either.

Nope, just replaced what was there with the same size. More modern (shit) looking radiators will kick out more heat so it depends if you've got big spaces to warm up.

There are calculators online - they are conservative.

Personally I'd get modern because more heat less space.
