Possibly stupid question re seatposts, clamps etc

  • What is the proper or best way to determine the size of the seatpost needed for an older frame? Is it id - a certain amount? And for the clamp?

  • Vernier caliper

  • Sometimes the age and tubing is the clue...

  • Thanks guys. I have a vernier. But.. exact minus a certain amount or just: " this is the diameter, post is same, and clamp is the size of the OD?"

  • Or go oversize and get a universal inverse shim from Halfords.

  • Use the "internal jaws".

  • Or, buy a seat tube gauge. Admittedly, it’s not something you’ll use every day and it’s not much use for anything else but it will give you the definitive size. Alternatively, take your frame to a bike shop and ask them to measure it using theirs and play nice by buying your seatpost from them.

  • Thanks folks! I happened to have a few seat-posts knocking around, and found one which is obviously "right" .. For the other (n=x+1) bicycles, I have ordered a cheap 'n nasty gauge. :)
