  • Tym has been going misty eyed about the Aria Pro IIs recently, I really don't get it... I'm sure they're fine, but why the fuck would you?

What's next, a Westone Thunder II for £2k?!?

  • Washburns and Laneys are really hip with the new school sludge bands. I guess it's pushed the price up a bit. So odd to someone of my age.

  • Yeah the THR5 is great - I got one last week - saves me dragging out the old Marshall MG10 :)

  • Ha! I used to play the Washburn through a 120w solid state Laney head and giant Orange 4x12.

  • Remember playing Junkhead by Alice in Chains on it at a school concert.

  • Laney amps are great tho', have very fond memories of one of the heads at the Grosvenor... It sounded absolutely boss...

  • The oldies and tubeys are. Not so much the early 90s solid state stuff. Iomi played Laneys didn't he?

  • OK, I think I need to own this... Guy has listed it as a B-bender but it looks like a G-bender to me, which I would much rather have TBH...

Gonna make a cheeky lowball offer and see how we go...

  • Always wanted a B-bender equipped Tele so I could get all Clarence White when the mood took me... Bloody pricey bits of kit tho'... Found an ex-Keith Richards Tele Custom that had one fitted in Vintage & Rare once (the old place in Earl's Court), only £750 (in 1989)... May as well have been £750m... Pffft...

Post #24 on this very thread... It is a B-bender, I had a closer look at the pics... Still tempted...

Things in my favour: Guy reckons he bought it in the states twelve years ago, there's no cover on the back of the guitar so there's an exposed mechanism, no provenance on the body/bender, he can't tell me anything about the guitar so don't know where he got the '54 MIJ Tele from and that contouring on the front is fuckin' fugly, etc...

I may offer him AU$1k posted and see what he says...

EDIT: I'm out, total bullshit guitar...

  • Here...

  • I would definitely rip out that middle pickup... And maybe the neck pickup as well... And replace that horrid pearloid guard with something white/green and vintage-y... Not a fan of that bridge either... 😂

  • Weird. Surprised it's stable with that much wood gone.

  • I think it's an attachment that's screwed to the back of a Tele, I've seen a pic of Clarence White playing one of these before...

  • Clarence's is very similar to that actually, I though his was just routed out like a modern one... This is amazing... Must weigh a ton...

  • Ohhhh. *penny drops

  • Hello guitar people, my elder child person (14.75 years old) wants an electric guitar for Christmas.

She is already reasonably proficient on acoustic guitar and ukelele. Any recommendations? Budget around £200.

    Thanks

    Edit: amp suggestions also welcome.

  • Fender Squier Deluxe Jazzmaster, just under £300 but will last her until she gets her first big advance from Sony... They sound great, cool colour, quirkier/more fun than a strat and a nice easy step sonically from acoustic as they do sound like proper electrified guitars... It's taken me thirty five years to get this...

Or spend a few extra quid and get her the J Mascis signature... The black AC4C1 is a great sounding budget amp option to go with it...

I realise I've totally blown your budget but do you really, REALLY love your child?

  • Thanks - most helpful.

Budget is flexible; I'm ok with spending a bit more if the thing is tangibly better. I'm confident that it won't end up gathering dust as she is committed to playing music and spends most of her time on this.

  • @>>>>>> Lols at recommending a £300 amp on a £200 budget! The squire jazz masters are pretty good by all accounts though - especially if you buy from a shop that checks the setup properly.
She will need an amp of some sort though and that’s another £100 at least.

  • If she's not the type to feel hard done by receiving a second-hand guitar for Christmas you'll definitely get more for your money and likely pick up something practically new anyway. I know when I was that age I'd have preferred a better used guitar than a cheaper new one!

I've been really impressed by some of the Epiphone guitars I've tried recently...
Epiphone Les Paul SL are comically cheap but actually seem really cool and it would free up the budget to allow for a nice amp to go with it! They do loads of colours too.

  • I always thought second hand guitars were better than new ones, because all the bands i liked played shitty beaten up guitars. I loved going to a second hand place (back in the 90s when there were loads!) and finding a guitar i liked with my dad.

  • I did qualify my recommendation!!! 😂😂😂

  • The difference in budget between something that's a bit shit and something you could actually go out and gig with straight away is quite small... £600 will get you a great guitar paired with a fantastic amp (don't forget tuner, leads and a strap)... Black Friday is coming up, keep an eye on the deals...
