• One thing about that though is that your normal trousers will experience more wear. My jeans started to develop saddle marks, and also the odd chain mark. Since my commute went up in length and I switched to commuting in full gear, my normal clothes are being treated so much better.

  • I recon that after 4 or 5 miles I'd be hankering after the Lycra.
    Probably less.

  • 12 each way. Normal clothes.
    But definitely hanker...

  • For any reasonable commuting distance (≤ 15 miles each way) personally I find normal clothes are fine. The much greater factor for consideration is will the cyclist in question be hooning it or casually cruising in?

  • For me, about 7k is the point where I start to think about lycra. Actually, I'd probably wear normal clothes on the bottom, and a lycra / sports top, I've done that before quite successfully.

    But I also usually cycle rather quickly.
