One thing about that though is that your normal trousers will experience more wear. My jeans started to develop saddle marks, and also the odd chain mark. Since my commute went up in length and I switched to commuting in full gear, my normal clothes are being treated so much better.
Yeah it does seem to depend on the specific setup and saddle material / cut / softness etc., but I don't think you can get away without any marks at all.
