About 30 years ago before the Single European Market was set up British lorries needed permits for some of the EU countries they went into. There were never enough of these permits, in part due to the Thatcher policy of minimum engagement. The solution was for everyone to run on forged permits, or with help from French customs officers you could use a single permit many times for a small consideration. British drivers would stock up with duty free cigarettes and half bottles of whisky to aid the crossing of borders along the way. We were very popular with the customs officers in other countries.
