Now just working out a plan to get the trainer and bike on to the antenatal ward.

If this is getting too complicated, maybe you should just get on the turbo, progressively increase the watts every minute until you can't carry on any more, then take 75% of your best minute power and use that as your FTP.

Possibly a stupid question, but is it possible to do a ramp test on a dumb trainer?

I have a Fluid 2 and a graph with speed v power from using it with a Powertap hub years ago.

So about this ramp test....
I just did one for my first session and it’s way lower than expected. Previously tested around 270 and this came back at 170. Now I’m expecting lower than 270 but it doesn’t feel right.
I was in ERG mode, it felt like maybe I was going too hard but it was showing as holding the target...
So I’m hoping a retest is due but what configuration should I go for.
I’m using trainer road but have Wahoo head unit and kickr -
• #2036
170? Unless you're a 30kg child I guess your turbo wasn't calibrated.
If you ride with power it should be pretty obvious if it's showing correct wattages. -
• #2037
Ok phew, I’ll recalibrate it and try again tomorrow.
I don’t have a power meter yet -
• #2038
Am I best using a different setting from ERG??
-
• #2039
If you're using trainerroad and a smart trainer it should set it automatically (check this is the case with your trainer, maybe the trainer itself needs to be set manually to ERG?).
You shouldn't be using ERG mode for normal FTP tests but for Ramp Tests, TR will enable it.

Thanks!
It was in ERG but I was changing gear....
Rookie mistake number 1.
More to come I suspect!! -
• #2041
No gear changes, no position changes, no finishing sprints, just get into race position, ride as long as you can at basically the same cadence and stop when you can't keep going.
-
• #2042
Copy that I’ll try again tomorrow.
Ensuring I calibrate again -
• #2043
Also stay seated, don’t sprint for the end, and keep going till your legs give up.
-
• #2044
I’m not in a sprint mood anyway haha
I’m not expecting anything great more just a reasonably realistic starting point for training. Then looking to start proper in January once things have settled at home. -
• #2045
Have you considered maintaining your position, not accelerating at the end and continuing the effort until you are no longer able?
-
• #2046
Also you might want to keep your sit bones in a fixed position, refrain from ending enthusiastically and trying your damnedest to go for as long as your legs are able.
-
• #2047
Then again you should probably try to
- sit down and stay there
- don't engage a finishing sprint
- force yourself to ride the ramp as long as physically possible
- sit down and stay there
-
• #2048
Have you considered a Ramp Test?
-
• #2049
FFS, now I want to do a ramp test too
