  • A few years ago I purchased a single bit of cycling kit while living in the UK from a particular brand. A year ago I moved to Australia, and have visited their website a few times. This morning I received an email with a special offer for Australian customers. How could they possibly know my location? I am subscribed to their emails.

  • How could they possibly know my location

From your IP address. If you used your email to log in to their site, they would then be able to connect your email to your location.

If you didn't log in, they've got it from the IP address you were on when you opened the emails, by embedding remote content and then seeing where you called it from. Mailing lists routinely use that method to see if people are actually opening the mail, it's only a small step to lookup the IP address too and see where they are opening it.

  • Makes sense. I've never received such specific advertising before, more just the "you viewed this, so you must like this other thing".
