All legendary skins area automatically transferred to the trapper as soon as they're skinned - even if you die; you just wont get the money from selling it to him.
This means you can still create the outfit.

Ta. Fancy hats await! I'm finding the game pretty tedious and slow tbh, my heart's not really in it. Plus I'm trying to be Good and it keeps wanting me to punch innocents, whereas I'd rather just menace them a bit.

That’s good to know. I managed to get the bear but lost the skin at the camp somehow and have t found a trapper yet. I want that hat.
