The diamond story is indeed an aside, we already know Banks is a scumbag.
But if it true there were already concerns about him and an investigation was stopped and then he spends 8 million on a campaign, well, you'd think a bit of due dilegence on referendum campaigners is quite important.

There seems to be little evidence of a Banks - Russian link apart from him trying and failing to con them over his diamond mine.
The issue is that his Leave.EU money came from offshore businesses on Gibraltar and Isle of Man. The alleged criminality could be around the funding and tax arrangements of those businesses.
