  • Anyone else see that Spain and the UK have done a deal over Gibraltar, but that what that deal is will remain secret (until when I do not know)?

  • Yep, I heard that on the Brexitcast podcast.

    Exchangeable for c.1 euro soon.

  • Hospital I work at (UCLH) is paying the £65 fee for our 1300 or so EU staff to apply for this "settled status" scheme and employment lawyers to assist with the applications. Thank goodness for the Brexit dividend!

  • King's is offering that too. It's highly unclear whether I can apply for that though, as this whole thing is still a fucking quagmire.

  • Thats a Tier 2 Visa, I was in that prison for 5 years.

  • Fucking good-for-nothing pack of incompetent fuckfaces. This is the level of competency that I expect from officials in Paraguay (not quite such a random choice as it sounds, I mostly grew up there). I thought this was supposed to be a wealthy Western European nation, why are the standards to get into a high position in government the same as I would expect for a position as a street sweeper?

  • I suspect the average street sweeper would be deeply offended if they knew they were being compared to Grayling.

To answer your question. The upper echelons of the Tory party are more densely entwined than the aristocracy.
My MP, Nick Hurd, is the fourth successive MP in his male line.
And I'm told the Tories are dedicated to stamping out inter-generational welfare dependency.

  • Fair point. Apologies to all street sweepers out there, they both work harder and probably smarter than that idiot. I definitely wouldn't trust him to leave a street clean.

  • It is really quite amazing, as my employer has to comply with immigration law, my contract says that I am responsible for my immigration status, then nobody can check if all is OK.

    Amazing.

Clearly deviced by people that never actually worked practical jobs dealing with people and WTF is going on / where is this thing / where do I find it...

If push comes to shove they'll sort something for me (big international company so they have the knowledge/offices outside the UK) but really, well done people.

  • That's really nice they pay for it :)

There is a scheme for vulnerable EU immigrants where the HO will waive their fee. As you can imagine, a classic case of don't read the comments...

  • (big international company so they have the knowledge/offices outside the UK)

I work for one of those (130,000 staff worldwide), the head of HR here said that if you don't have a visa they won't even accept application let alone give you an interview.

dont have a visa = not be a british citizen or dependant of someone who is sponsored by an employer i.e. they won't sponsor a visa for anyone which is bonkers when you think about the size of the organisation

Is that a regular thing? Sorry, I'm not really on top of the LFGSS social scene, I only joined the forum a little while ago and it looks like some of the social stuff is a bit dead, but maybe I just didn't look at the right thread.

  • We're smaller ~ 300 people or so, but that is generally our policy. Sorting it out and keeping on top of it is too much hassle.

  • Sorting it out and keeping on top of it is too much hassle.

Absolutely, I have done it for a really small employer (for me) who didnt have any HR, its an utter ball ache and a big expense but thats British bureaucracy.

Whats bonkers is that this will be happening to EU citizens now which I thought would never happen given the amount of people working in the UK, good revenue growth for the Home Office.

  • As a Commonwealth immigrant I have to prove my immigration status to employers on a regular basis. I give them a photocopy of my passport and a photocopy of a previous passport. They put them in a file and ask for the same again a few years later. The evidence is totally unintelligible to anyone not serving as an immigration officer but it is never checked so everyone is happy.

  • Yep and new employees may be hit, because they cannot prove their status thanks to this shamblecluster of the government.

I am not sure how my employer deals with visas as I've never been in that boat. But we have people from Sri Lanka/Jordan and not just EUwans.

We did ask HR for help but nothing yet. But then HR doesn't know what the F is going on either, Settled Status is not yet rolled out AND they don't give you anything physical, just an online number.

    What can go wrong...

  • less congested sea routes

Starts trying to buy up old ferry ports on the south coast.

Yes! Bring back the Dieppe to Shoreham ferry service. Six hours at sea on a converted train ferry followed by an hour or so waiting for the tide to get into Shoreham dock.

  • r u on a visa though? It looks like they will be putting a visa on EU workers.

A check on passport from eligible countries (the citizens of which can work freely) is loose and I guess there might be some kind of HR audit/Compliance that covers it.

If you are on a visa which means you are sponsored by an employer who has a license and a login to SMS (Sponsorship Management System) where they have to input the CoS (Certificate of sponsorship) number, thats watertight.

  • r u on a visa though?

No I have a vague status "indefinite leave to remain". If EU "settled status" is run the same way the system will be so chaotic it will not work. Since 2009 I am supposed to have had an up to date stamp in my passport but the Home Office is so hopeless they have been unable to process this for over 150,000 people in my position. They have no hope of running it for over 3 million EU citizens.

  • grow the grapes that France is now too hot for

If we manage to grow grapes where I'm from, you've got a lot of waiting to do..

  • 43 million out of date Wagonwheels

They can't actually go out of date can they? #brodouevenpreservatives

  • No I have a vague status "indefinite leave to remain".

    ILR bros!
