I think you're all right and I'm wrong, I think the CD changer section of my boot makes it seem slightly smaller than it actually is. However, my mum owned a W203 (2003) C Class Estate for about 10 years and the boot in that was just as big. I used it to transport my Compomotive ML 15x8 wheels and they fit with the back seats up, and they had tyres on at the time too. That boot was much bigger than my mum's current B8 A4 Avant.
I could get all four wheels (with tyres on) from the 911 in the back of the 850, in a single side-by-side row, I can't do that in the C55 - much to Richie's amusement.
The significant slope of the boot hatch on the C55 accounts for some of that - the vertical hatch on the 850 is significantly better in that respect. The Volvo has very little intrusion on the rear from suspension, diff and so forth, which helps also.
