I'd actually somehow forgotten that you can just turn the radiator off.
Although on closer inspection I'm not sure whether I should be turning this:

Neither has anything obvious on it.
Top one clearly does say something on it, and it has serrated finish which suggests that it's made for turning.
Bit of dusting wouldn't go amiss :-)
Radiator valve should be on the right hand side if you just want to turn that off.
You may need to pop the plastic bit off altogether to get to the actual lockshield valve
