  • Also, I think people assume the Volvo is a lot bigger than it is. It's a competitor to the C Class and 3 Series, not the E and 5, so actually my old E39 had quite a bit bigger boot, and although @mashton made a funny, I think the boot size isn't too different between the Volvo and the Merc that replaced it.

Which is why I think you thought they were bigger, because they filled up the boot, which you assumed to be bigger than it actually is.

  • The boot is noticeably bigger than in my old e46, and although slightly smaller than the s6 in terms of floor space I think the square back makes a big difference. In my mind. Which is what matters.

  • That is from it running. It takes a snap shot over set period and gives you max discrepancy.

  • I beg to differ, think the V70/850 is a bigger car than that era 3xx /Cxxx/ A4 have you seen the back seats and boot in those? My tape measure shows its 5xx/Exxx/A6 size though not in levels of luxury maybe.
Square back helps it eat things though no matter the floor area.

  • Bad sentence formation, have stealth edited. Your actually begging to agree ;)

  • Don't think an e46 could gobble 4 bikes, a 10 man tent, general camping equipment and a father in law, then drive all the way to Norway and back.

Pretty sure your V70 can’t manage this either any more.

    (Sorry)

  • This is true. At the moment I own two executive estates that don't move. I'm a very popular guy round these ways.

  • Actually wouldn't a properly smooth intake be undesirable, in terms of having turbulence to help even out the fuel-air mix throughout each cylinderfull?

  • Polished smooth, yes. But an 80 grit finish is enough to create a decent boundary flow, it doesn't need to resemble a relief map of the Andes.

  • Fuel isn’t ever going to see this part of the intake, the injector is post ITB plate. These are the trumpets.

  • Very cool.

  • My 850/V70 took 5 polo bikes, 5 adults, extra wheels and other things in a flight bag on the roof, Glasgow to Bristol and back. Still just scraped 40mpg too.

  • I think you're all right and I'm wrong, I think the CD changer section of my boot makes it seem slightly smaller than it actually is. However, my mum owned a W203 (2003) C Class Estate for about 10 years and the boot in that was just as big. I used it to transport my Compomotive ML 15x8 wheels and they fit with the back seats up, and they had tyres on at the time too. That boot was much bigger than my mum's current B8 A4 Avant.

  • A4 is like a golf, prob even slightly smaller boot than a golf estate as it'll have a sloping back, an amp and something else tucked into the side pods

  • Sick Burn.

  • Big boy pics from the weekend. There's some overlap with the phone pics, and apologies to the instagram crowd for the repeat.

  • Recently stood next to Gordon Murray, was introduced to him I said nothing more than hello, my opinion has really gone up of him. Very passionate man of both the sport and the future of people in the sport. Irelevant story bro.

  • The 8 series still has the under floor areas to store things.

  • Boot capacity in litres (seats up/down):

    Golf (stnd) = 380 / 1,270
    A4 = 505 / 1,510
    Golf Estate = 605 / 1,620

I could get all four wheels (with tyres on) from the 911 in the back of the 850, in a single side-by-side row, I can't do that in the C55 - much to Richie's amusement.

The significant slope of the boot hatch on the C55 accounts for some of that - the vertical hatch on the 850 is significantly better in that respect. The Volvo has very little intrusion on the rear from suspension, diff and so forth, which helps also.

  • Looks like the body of a girocopter, or some small aircraft
