TLDR - The headlines are; felt a bit burnt out - didn't do much bike - installed BB - took apart rear wheel hub - ordered new wheelset + other bits. Kids ill so no school run needs this morn. Bike seat fitted to wife-bike as a stop gap. Revised deadline - end of week. - Maybe.
Well. Mrs Shep was off to Brum to meet a friend on Sat leaving me with the troops. I did some moderate to poor parenting for a couple of hours and then palmed them off on the G'parents. Cycled home and the real plan was to get in the garden to work on the deck that I started building in June and has allegedly ...'taken way longer than I thought and we should have just got a man in..'.... So a swift cuppa and on with the boots and thermals...
Except after the tea I just could not bring myself to go outside - generally felt whack and defo not up to sawing joists. The Marin was sitting in the hall so (even though i really just wanted to have a nap) i forced myself to the toolbox.
First order of biz was the BB - on friday at 6am i Amazon primed a UN55 - which (almost unbelievably) arrived before I got home from work the same day. I do feel for the poor warehouse slaves....buuuuuut.....
Anyway. I was worried about the BB install as the threads were looking less than ideal, but I used all my powers of restraint to caress the cups . It worked time will tell if i ballsed it up. Really hope my chainline maths is right.
Then disassembled the shonky rear hub - unbranded cup and cone job. Cleaned it out - the cones were pitted, the BBs seemed to be silver on one side and kinda gold on the other - gold ones pitted. cup surfaces - pitted - stupidly I ploughed on thinking ...'this green grease from Condor was well expensive - im sure it will improve it ...' regreased liberally and reassembled. Rough as guts. Not surprising considering its carried 3-5 yr olds up and down a hill 5 days a week for two years with no maintenance.
At this point I gave up - wife was on the way home and I spent the rest of the afternoon cleaning up and lying on the sofa ordering bits. New Deore wheelset, unecessary nitto seatpost and turbo inbound.
2/4 Sheps got proper ill on Sunday - thankfully just fevers not vom - but nothing achieved. Spent Sunday night watching last weeks episode of Gardeners World, with a largish scotch, ham sandwich and feeling of wistful melancholy. Wonder if Monty's got a bike....
