  • They've been mentioned here before. Their recipe book is great. Tell your non vegan rellies to get it for you for Christmas, and then give it back to them.

  • Indeed, I've not had a bad thing out of the Bosh book.

Spag bol with sainsburys fake mince tonight. V tasty.

  • I’m making toad in the hole with the heck snossages tonight. Excited.

  • Got some that Granose freeze dried soy mince from. Sainsbury's the other day on a whim. Nice packaging and very cheap. Anyone used it? Will report back after we make some more soya wat or something

  • Is anyone else really into Fudco soy chunks? Cheap as chips and handy protein for loads of recipes. In sainos and lots of corner shops.
Just rehydrate with the flavouring of your choice and boom.

  • Sorry, forgot to reply to this--yeah, I don't know. I'm sure she would also have stressed that she got amazing support, but I have to say the other thing stuck in my mind more. If I remember correctly, there was certainly a difference with the organiser of that Antarctic event. I'd have to ask her again about the extent of all this.

  • Just been back to my local vegan restaurant - The Black Cat in Hackney. It turns out they have reinvented their 'house' burger...

This was once a large mashed burger patty which was crispy on the outside, soft in the middle and had a nicely balanced flavor - served with a great big portion of potato wedges, side salad, and vegan slaw.

The new version is around a quarter of the size, and consists of a small rubbery seitan patty )which left both myself and my girlfriend feeling a little sick in the stomach). They also decided to knock off all of the extras and now it comes with some homemade crisps.

Oh, and they managed to retain the previous price of £10.50 for the pleasure.

And it provoked me to, for the first time in my life, write about my dining experience.

    Before and after photos incoming:

  • £10.50 for that!? Did you speak to staff at the time?

  • My girlfriend didn't want to.

To be fair, there were a few posters up marketing their newly revised in-house burger, but they certainly didn't depict anything that remotely indicated the new portion size or lack of sides.

Anyway, the place is normally pretty good, but empty on a Friday night in central Hackney - maybe it's a sign they have taken the piss once too often.

  • Any vegan brummies around? Where would you recommend for a tasty lunch? Kings Heath/Moseley area, or town itself? Ta very much.

  • What a piss take. Won't be going there again

  • Man that looks shit compared to the old one.
At least you have plenty of selection around there. So many vegan places out east. Not so many down my ends.
The old ship inn used to be my local pub in Hackney, I wonder if they do any Veggie/Vegan options these days.

  • I had a really good lunch in Zindiya Indian street food place in Moseley recently. Not an exclusively vegan but there was a ton of options. Nice place too.

  • £10.50 for that!? Did you speak to staff at the time?

    ^ this

    Seriously, what the fuck!

  • On the subject of portion sizes. Coop vegan onion bhaji and spring rolls - my lazy snacking options. Used to be 1.49 and 1.99 for four, now 1.10 for two (smaller) versions of each. Food price inflation or more sinister supply-based reasons?

  • Meanwhile... top half. Home made hummus pakora. Bottom half. Leek and mushroom curry pakora :)

  • Hummus pakora? Does that work?

  • Not really! Was using up leftover homemade. Was er, a bit, hmm. Still, better than binning it :)

  • However, (foraged) quinces today made into quince cheese... total result. Now have c2.5kg of lovely fruit-based delight in the fridge, chilling for the end of the year - apparently needs 4 to 6 weeks to firm up. More news on that late December...

  • Did you attend?
    Did anyone attend?

Are there likely to be tickets on the door on Sunday?

  • No, I didn't go in the end (and won't go tomorrow). This is partly because I have the vegan market on my doorstep every week-end (boast post), but also because I managed to do my foot in while walking the other day. Cycling's fine, but I was worried about walking around as much as I always do at VegFest. Needs a little more rest.

No idea if you can get tickets on the door. I think I tried a few years ago and didn't succeed. I seem to recall you could get them at the first one, but I'm not quite sure I've got that right. Are they not selling any on-line any more/is it sold out?

  • I managed to do my foot in

    Hope you heal up, quick!

  • Don't want toe miss the ball.

  • Thanks, ended up getting a bunch of things at the Moseley farmers market, great vegan options in there.
