Ah, domestic compost wasn't working. I imagine landfill will decompose them quickly still even if not the intended outcome.

From what I hear compostable materials will only properly decompose if taken to either an industrial site or actively worked in a home setting ie, exposed to air, water and turning on a regular basis.
It's the take out habit in the first place that blows me away - why do people feel the need to always have a mug of coffee on their person? How many coffees (8 oz?) per day are required?

About 4 in my case, of which either one or two are usually from a shop.

I don't see why the concept is surprising. People travel and coffee is available at the intersections of journeys.

If my commute wasn't 2 hours each way, I'd have fewer takeaway coffees.

I'll usually have 3, one at my local during the workday (I'm a driver) bookended by homemade in the morning and after work.
I guess I'm old and remember people stopping to have a coffee as opposed to not stopping yet still having a coffee.

Two years in... Aiming to get out within the next year or so.

It's oxidized aluminium, isn't it? No idea if it's dangerous or not, I assume not as every single Bialetti looks like that after a while

Clean it if you need to, it'll come back regardless. If it doesn't affect the taste don't worry.

I think it's gunk sticking to limescale. Put some descaler in and wait. Warm it a bit if you're impatient

While on the topic of takeaway coffee -
are these kleen kanteen "insulated tumblers" the best reusable things that keep you coffee hot a bit?

What I want is to get a regular coffee / americano - and take that with me on the train, or just around the block, I don't need to throw it in my bag or commute half an hour with it until I drink it.
So the "insulated" part is not really that necessary, though I like it when the last sip of my coffee is still hot instead of lukewarm.
Neither does it need to be 100% spill-proof, though it might be nice to have it on occasion (I will take whatever lid off for drinking though as I hate drinking coffee through lids with holes in them).

Anyways, I gathered from this thread that those are quite good, and that the "2.0"-lid is better than the old one - any other recommendations for a re-usable takeaway cup?

Yea I saw those too (and thought those will be nice to drink out of as well)..
..glass is single-walled though, so I don't suppose it keeps the coffee hot at all?

The lid helps cut down on heat loss, and so it's probably a bit warmer than a normal ceramic mug, but not by that much. I prefer non-insulated mugs tbh, as I always manage to burn my mouth taking an unguarded sip from insulated containers.

My wife has one - it's good as a carry around the house job but if you're moving around quickly running for trains, getting on the tube etc and the coffee sloshes around it does come out of the hole at the top a bit too readily for my liking. I'd never trust it in a bag - it just squeezes on with a rubbery bit around the lid. It does keep stuff at a very nice temp for drinking though but I'd be far too concerned the lid would hit something hard in a bag and it would pop it off.

That being said I only now realize these tumbler-type things don't take the completely closed lids that are available for the bigger ones Kleen Kanteen make.

It probs keeps it hotter than a paper cup would, especially if you prewarm the cup. Keep Cup do a double walled insulated one now too (long play?)

Looked into this, realised it's just a plastic "Booster" (ffs) that goes over the actual glass cup.
This sucks, I'm not having this taking apart for cleaning fumbling with silicone bands condensation whatever bullshit ain't nobody got time fo that
