• I know the reviews all say its great and its amazing but its really not. At least my experience wasn't.
I contacted ABUS weeks ago and NO response yet :( Poor form.

This after a mere 30CM drop onto concrete:

It looks as though the impact of the drop - weak as it was - dislodged the ABUS badge into its rubber housing which acted as a wedge to force the entire mech open (see second pic)
Once I plier'd the badge back into its original place the lock resettled - as if nothing had happened.

Its crazy something like this can cause an expensive lock to separate like that.
If you own one of these, do test it as it could be something that you could regret.
Going back to my OnGuard. Zep out.

  • Pics aren't showing for me.

  • Pics not working, dude.

  • Dammit!

  • You damaged the plastic housing by dropping it (probably 2kg in weight) 'weakly' on concrete?

  • Be more careful with your stuff. Lock still works right?

  • Yeh it could be that.. but surely you shouldn't be able to see so many internal metal'ly parts?

  • Well, gravity is considered to be a weak force at the quantum level.

  • God I hope its the housing...

  • Quantum level being 30cm from the floor?

  • Pretty sure the metal you see has nothing to do with the actual lock/locking mechanism.

  • It does seem to work...maybe it was just cosmetic.

  • looks like the cover is just two halves, snapped together.

being as its already been part way off, remove it fully and lets see the lock body... Id expect a substantial solid tube

  • Definitely will do that if it opens up again - thanks guys :D didn't think he housing was so chunky ..its like 25% of the entire lock at least.

  • Is it not just the rubber casing?

  • I've "broken" the plastic housing off of all my Abus d-locks and gotten rid of all of the branding so it makes it harder for potential theivs to ID.

Other pros include more room to lock bike with and will really hurt my opponent if I need to use it to dual at sundown.

  • Isn't the opposite side of this that bike thieves are warded off your bike by big name lock brands? More likely to go for a no name than Krypto?

  • More likely to go for a no name than Krypto?

Would have thought the thinking behind debranding a lock was that the tea leaves might know about weak points or vulnerabilities on a specific brand of lock.

  • Had my ABUS Granit X Plus for over 10 years...

How it has looked for the past 5 or so:

Bit of inner tube to replace the housing and to prevent it chipping the frame of the bike it locks too.

  • Yeah kind of what @M_V said. Also by debranding it I'm trying to send a signal out that I know you (potential bike theif) are looking at my bike and lock so I've stripped it. So if I've gone through the trouble of that then I might have spent s few quid on my lock. But who knows, that might bite me in the arse one day.

    Still riding OKR?
