  • Maybe just go for a mountain double?
    I have 40/28 on my daily/tourer.
40t is fine for most things and then you have a bailout gear for really steep/long hills.

  • That's an option too...

It's just I have the 3x9 groupset already so it'll cost me nothing and all I'd need for the 1x11 is a shifter and some cranks.

  • Aaah. I see.
    I'd go for that then.

  • I concur. Have a 1x11 setup on my Croix de Fer & it's worked great, even touring up >20% gradients with a 10-42x42T setup.

  • Yeah I think 1x11 may be a go. Mainly because it does look much nicer.

  • I’d like to do the same to mine and use most of a 5800 group I have lying around, but often when costed up modifying a double and purchasing a NW chainring ends up pricier than sticking with a double up front. What’s the most cost effective 1x chain set setup there is at the moment?

  • J&L ebay NW ring on your existing chainset probably cheapest

  • Think I saw this/met you at your work yesterday - looks like it's gonna be pretty great!

1x11 Deore is probably the more sensible choice, even if the heart says old XTR...

  • Yeah, I've done this. Stuck it on some £30 SRAM Rival GXP cranks from eBay & has been fine. Chainline ain't perfect, but it works.

  • 10s Sram MTB mech and road levers if you want a cheap 1x clutched groupset

  • Yeah this really. Or if you have a Shimano road group just buy a MTB clutch mech and a shift mate, there are ways around it. Just depends on budget etc.

I honestly think I'm gonna go 1x11 once some other bits sell. Gonna use 9speed XTR for the time being because it's rad as fuck

  • I see tonnes of faces every day! Introduce yourself next time my man!

  • Last part ordered today. So I am hoping to get it built by the end of the week!

  • Here she is! 3x9 is way too much for commuting but it'll be sweet when loaded up. Needs pizza rack asap too.

It rides great and is super comfy but the saddle and seatpost need to go as they are rubbish. But it's kept the cost down and will get upgraded when cash allows.

  • Nevermind what I said about 1x11 earlier.. Those cranks are ace!

  • Yeah the cranks are lovely!

A few small changes like 650b, saddle, mudguards and rack and I'll be happy!

  • I'd consider the Pelago commuter rack.
It's a bit spendy, but I've never had any problems with mine.

  • They look pretty much the same. Why one over the other?

  • Instead of the pizza rack?
I prefer the stainless steel construction to aluminium and the Pelago bolts together with locking nuts rather than threads, which means there's no threads to strip and it's incredibly solid.

  • nice! bars ID? look like they could be on-one OG?

  • on one mary, i believe.

  • Yeah that's the one!

  • For some reason I look at this bike and I am not happy with it. The lines don't look right and I think the bar/stem/cockpit set up just doesn't look right. I know I do not like the shape of the bars, even though they are comfy etc so I am going to change them.

I also think I want 1x11. So the Groupset is up for sale. Pm me if interested.

  • this looks so cool. if anyone is interested in selling a cdf frame (cheap and old) 56-58 please let me know.

  • You can't beat a do it all bike especially built on a budget .
